The New York Knicks emerged as the biggest winners at the 2026 ESPY Awards after capturing their first NBA championship in 53 years. Their remarkable season translated into multiple honors during the ceremony held at Lincoln Center in New York City.
Jalen Brunson led the celebration by winning Best NBA Player, Best Championship Performance and Best Male Athlete. Meanwhile, OG Anunoby earned the award for Best Play, while the Knicks also claimed Best Team.
Because the ceremony returned to New York for the first time in 27 years, the city’s basketball success added extra excitement to an already memorable evening.
ESPN insiders focused on the FIFA World Cup
Although the awards celebrated athletic achievements, much of the backstage discussion centered on the recently completed FIFA World Cup.
Many ESPN executives and longtime employees reportedly remain eager to bring the tournament back to the network. ESPN previously broadcast six FIFA World Cups between 1994 and 2014, and many inside the company still consider that era one of its greatest accomplishments.
Former ESPN president John Skipper recently expressed his desire to see the World Cup return to ESPN. However, FIFA has not yet opened bidding for the English-language media rights beginning with the 2030 tournament.
Industry sources expect the next television rights package to command billions of dollars, making any future bidding process highly competitive.
Marcello Hernandez shines as host
Saturday Night Live comedian Marcello Hernandez earned widespread praise for hosting the 2026 ESPY Awards.
His opening monologue featured jokes aimed at sports stars and celebrities while also poking fun at last year’s host, Shane Gillis. Throughout the evening, Hernandez kept the audience engaged with lighthearted humor directed at Tiger Woods, Bill Belichick and Jake Paul.
Unlike many athlete hosts from previous years, Hernandez relied on his professional comedy background to maintain the show’s energy. As a result, many observers viewed his performance as one of the strongest ESPY hosting efforts in recent years.
Pat McAfee continues to grow his influence
Pat McAfee remained one of the most recognizable personalities at the event. Throughout the evening, athletes and executives frequently stopped to greet the popular broadcaster.
One of McAfee’s most memorable moments came when he presented the Pat Tillman Award for Service to U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskan.
His growing presence demonstrated how influential he has become across both sports media and live television. Consequently, McAfee continues to strengthen his role as one of ESPN’s biggest personalities.
Memorable moments closed out the night
Several lighter moments also stood out during the ceremony.
The Savannah Bananas opened the show, although some viewers suggested the exhibition baseball team has become overexposed following frequent national appearances.
Meanwhile, actor Will Ferrell received praise for his comedy segment with Hernandez after facing criticism for his recent appearance during Netflix’s Home Run Derby broadcast.
Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson also produced one of the night’s most talked-about moments when he appeared unfamiliar with Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani, prompting laughter from the audience.
Overall, the 2026 ESPY Awards successfully balanced championship celebrations, comedy and sports business conversations while highlighting New York’s unforgettable year in sports.
