Baltimore Ravens cornerback Nate Wiggins was carted off the practice field Tuesday after suffering an apparent left leg injury.
The injury happened during a one-on-one drill at Ravens training camp. Wiggins was covering rookie wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane when he went down in the end zone.
The Ravens are now waiting for more information about the severity of the injury.
Nate Wiggins Undergoes Tests After Injury
Ravens coach Jesse Minter said Wiggins was undergoing tests following the injury. The coach did not have a clear diagnosis when he spoke with reporters after practice.
Minter also said he remained optimistic about Wiggins’ situation.
However, the Ravens do not yet know whether the cornerback will miss significant time.
“Don’t have a ton of information on that yet,” Minter said. “We’ll get a look at it and see where it’s at.”
Wiggins’ status will be closely monitored because of his importance to Baltimore’s secondary.
The 2024 first-round pick has quickly established himself as one of the team’s most important defensive backs. He started 23 games during his first two NFL seasons.
Wiggins started all 17 games for Baltimore last season. He finished the year with three interceptions and 14 pass deflections.
Ravens Have Depth at Cornerback
Losing Wiggins for an extended period would create a major challenge for Baltimore.
The young cornerback is considered the Ravens’ top cover corner. His ability to defend receivers on the outside has made him an important part of the team’s defense.
Still, Minter expressed confidence in Baltimore’s depth at the position.
Veterans Marlon Humphrey and Chidobe Awuzie provide experience in the secondary. The Ravens also have younger options, including T.J. Tampa, Keyon Martin and Chandler Rivers.
The team could need that depth if Wiggins is forced to miss practice or preseason action.
For now, Baltimore will wait for the results of Wiggins’ tests before determining his next steps.
Nate Wiggins Injury Comes Before Preseason Opener
The timing of the injury is particularly important for the Ravens because their first preseason game is approaching.
Baltimore is scheduled to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.
Wiggins’ availability for that game will depend on the severity of his injury and how he responds in the coming days.
The Ravens have not announced a timetable for his return.
With the regular season still ahead, Baltimore will likely take a cautious approach with its starting cornerback. The team has several options behind him, but replacing a player with Wiggins’ experience and coverage ability would be difficult.
