Michelle Obama is giving back to the Chicago community that helped shape her.
Through the Obama Foundation’s Girls Opportunity Alliance, the former First Lady is directing $500,000 to 10 grassroots organizations across Chicago. The funding will support programs designed to help girls build confidence, access opportunities and develop skills for their futures.
The investment is expected to benefit more than 2,200 girls between ages 10 and 19.
The organizations receiving support work across several areas, including mental health, arts education, athletics and services for refugees. Together, their programs aim to address challenges that can affect girls as they grow and prepare for adulthood.
Michelle Obama Supports Chicago Girls
For Michelle Obama, investing in girls means creating opportunities for them to thrive.
“I’ve seen firsthand what happens when girls have the support, encouragement, and opportunities they deserve,” Obama tells ESSENCE.
The new funding builds on the Obama Foundation’s ongoing work through the Girls Opportunity Alliance. The initiative connects supporters with grassroots organizations working to improve opportunities for adolescent girls around the world.
Since its launch, the alliance has reached approximately 190,000 girls through 265 grassroots projects.
The latest Chicago investment brings that mission closer to Obama’s hometown, where local organizations are already working directly with young people and their families.
Funding Creates More Opportunities
The 10 Chicago organizations will use the funding to strengthen programs that respond to the needs of girls in their communities.
Some programs focus on helping young people navigate mental health challenges, while others provide creative and athletic opportunities. Additional efforts support refugee girls and families as they build new lives and connections within their communities.
The investment also highlights the role local organizations play in creating lasting opportunities. By supporting groups already embedded in Chicago neighborhoods, the Girls Opportunity Alliance can help expand programs that understand the experiences of the girls they serve.
For many participants, those resources can provide access to mentors, safe spaces, education and activities that may otherwise be difficult to reach.
A Continued Commitment to Girls
The Chicago initiative reflects a broader commitment from the Obama Foundation to support girls as they pursue their goals.
The Girls Opportunity Alliance focuses on adolescent girls because access to education, mentorship and other resources can influence their opportunities later in life.
For Obama, the work also carries a personal connection to Chicago. She grew up on the city’s South Side before becoming First Lady of the United States and later establishing the Obama Foundation with former President Barack Obama.
By investing in organizations serving girls in Chicago, the foundation is helping local leaders expand the support available to the next generation.
The $500,000 investment is another step in the Girls Opportunity Alliance’s effort to connect girls with the resources and encouragement they need to build stronger futures.
