Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially made box office history.
The Tom Holland-led superhero movie has passed Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing movie ever at the North American box office.
The Sony and Marvel film reached about $936.8 million in domestic ticket sales after 47 days in theaters. That total pushed it past The Force Awakens, which previously held the record with roughly $936.6 million.
As a result, Spider-Man: Brand New Day now sits at the top of the all-time domestic box office chart.
Spider-Man takes down a decade-old record
The Force Awakens held the domestic record for about a decade.
The 2015 Star Wars sequel became a major box office force after its release. It ultimately finished its North American run with $936.6 million.
However, Spider-Man: Brand New Day steadily closed the gap during its theatrical run.
The film had already crossed $900 million domestically on September 4. It became only the second movie to reach that milestone. It also reached the mark faster than The Force Awakens.
Now, the Marvel blockbuster has taken the top spot.
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man keeps breaking records
The latest milestone adds to a long list of records for Brand New Day.
The movie opened with approximately $360 million domestically. That figure surpassed Avengers: Endgame and gave the film the biggest domestic opening weekend ever at the time.
The film also reached several other box office milestones at a rapid pace.
For instance, it crossed $400 million in four days. It then passed $500 million in seven days and $600 million in nine days.
The movie reached $900 million in just 36 days. That was significantly faster than The Force Awakens, which needed 50 days to reach the same milestone.
Spider-Man makes more history
The domestic record is not the film’s only major achievement.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has also become one of the biggest movies in global box office history. Reports place its worldwide total above $2.4 billion.
That performance puts the film among the biggest global releases ever. However, its latest record specifically applies to the North American domestic box office.
For now, Brand New Day has another milestone to celebrate.
After more than 10 years, The Force Awakens is no longer the domestic box office champion.
Spider-Man has officially taken its place.
