Nicholas Boggs’ biography Baldwin: A Love Story is heading to the big screen.
Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground and Anonymous Content have optioned the book for a film adaptation. Boggs and author Marlon James will write the screenplay and executive produce the project.
James Baldwin biography gets film deal
The James Baldwin biography film will draw from Boggs’ recently published book.
Farrar, Straus and Giroux released Baldwin: A Love Story in August. The biography marks the first major book-length study of Baldwin in three decades.
Boggs used newly uncovered archival material to explore the writer’s life and work. The book also examines the personal relationships that influenced Baldwin throughout his career.
Baldwin’s relationships take center stage
The biography explores several important relationships in Baldwin’s life.
Among them are his bond with mentor Beauford Delaney and his relationship with Lucien Happersberger, whom the book identifies as Baldwin’s lover and muse.
Boggs also examines Baldwin’s connections with collaborators Engin Cezzar and Yoran Cazac.
These relationships offer a deeper look at the people who influenced Baldwin’s writing, identity and creative work.
Nicholas Boggs and Marlon James write the script
Boggs will adapt his own biography for the screen alongside Marlon James, the author of The Disappearers.
The pair will also executive produce the film.
Their involvement gives the project a direct connection to the source material. Boggs brings his research into Baldwin’s life, while James adds his experience as an acclaimed novelist.
Higher Ground brings Baldwin’s story to film
Higher Ground, the production company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama, is partnering with Anonymous Content on the adaptation.
The companies have not announced a director, cast or release date.
For now, the project offers a new opportunity to introduce Baldwin’s life and relationships to film audiences through Boggs’ recent biography.
