Anthony Mackie is heading back to Broadway.
The actor, best known for playing Sam Wilson, aka Captain America, in Marvel’s films, will return to the stage in spring 2027. Mackie will take on one of William Shakespeare’s most famous and notorious villains, Macbeth.
The Broadway role will mark Mackie’s return to the stage after a 16-year absence. He revealed the news in an exclusive interview with Deadline.
Mackie has built a major career on screen, particularly through his role as Sam Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, his return to Broadway will give audiences a chance to see him tackle one of Shakespeare’s most demanding characters.
Anthony Mackie takes on Macbeth
Shakespeare’s Macbeth follows a Scottish general whose ambition grows after he receives a prophecy that he will become king. His pursuit of power eventually leads to betrayal, violence and tragedy.
Mackie will portray the central character in the classic play when the production arrives on Broadway in 2027.
The role represents a major shift from the superhero world that has made Mackie a household name. Instead of Captain America’s shield, the actor will step into the dark world of Shakespearean tragedy.
Mackie returns to Broadway
Mackie’s upcoming Broadway appearance will be his first in 16 years.
The actor has maintained a successful career in film and television since his previous stage work. His Marvel role has become one of his most recognizable performances, especially after Sam Wilson officially took on the Captain America mantle.
Now, Mackie is returning to his theatrical roots with one of Shakespeare’s best-known characters.
The production is expected to give fans a new opportunity to see the actor showcase his stage skills while taking on the complex role of Macbeth.
A new chapter for Anthony Mackie
Mackie’s return to Broadway adds another major project to his growing career.
His portrayal of Macbeth will also allow him to explore a character far removed from the heroic image audiences know from Marvel. The Shakespearean villain is driven by ambition, fear and the desire for power.
Further details about the Broadway production, including its creative team and performance schedule, are expected as the 2027 run approaches.
For Mackie, however, the announcement already marks a major career moment. After 16 years away from Broadway, the actor is preparing to trade the Marvel universe for Shakespeare’s Scotland.
