Donavan McKinney spoke directly to working people in a short election night video after winning election to the U.S. House in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. The Democrat said his victory is about putting values first and fighting for families who hold two or three jobs to make ends meet.
McKinney, a Democratic state representative, and Republican T.P. Nykoriak competed for a seat Democrats have held since 1949. The Associated Press has called the race.
Donavan McKinney’s election night message to working people
McKinney opened the video by greeting supporters and marking the moment. “We are here on election night,” he said. “This means everything.”
He then described what he believes is at stake. “This is about working people and putting our values first,” he said. He pointed to people holding two or three jobs just to make ends meet. “We’re gonna work on those issues, and we’re gonna fight for you,” he said. “That’s what this is all about.”
He closed by saying Democratic wins are only part of the goal. “Making sure that Michigan is not only blue and votes Democrat, but making sure that we actually deliver on behalf of you,” he said.
How Donavan McKinney reached Congress
McKinney first had to beat a sitting member of his own party. He defeated incumbent U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar in the Democratic primary on Aug. 4. Progressive figures, including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, backed his campaign.
After the primary, The Cook Political Report rated the district solidly Democratic. That rating made McKinney the heavy favorite going into November.

What the win means for Detroit and the Downriver region
The district includes portions of Detroit, Grosse Pointe and the Downriver region. Coverage of his primary victory also noted a bigger shift. His win likely returns Detroit to Black representation in Congress, which ended with Thanedar’s 2022 victory.
What Donavan McKinney promised voters
In the video, McKinney did not outline specific policies. Instead, he framed his win as a promise to put working people first and deliver results. Voters can now measure that pledge against his record in Congress.
