What TCS is building in Michigan could change factories

Tata Consultancy Services is expanding its investment in artificial intelligence with the launch of a new technology center in Michigan designed to help manufacturers automate operations using robotics and advanced data systems.
The Indian IT services company opened its seventh Gemini Experience Centre in Troy, a city closely tied to the automotive industry near Detroit. The facility was created in partnership with Google Cloud and will focus entirely on a concept the company describes as physical AI.
Unlike earlier centers built by TCS in cities including Bengaluru, New York, Chennai, Riyadh, Singapore and São Paulo, the Michigan location is dedicated specifically to manufacturing applications. The site allows companies to test how robotics, sensors and artificial intelligence systems can operate together inside real-world factory environments.
The move highlights a growing push among technology companies to bring AI beyond software and into physical operations such as warehouses, production floors and industrial maintenance.
Robots designed to monitor and support factory operations
At the center of the new facility is what TCS describes as its Physical AI Blueprint. The framework combines artificial intelligence software with robots, environmental sensors and edge computing systems that process data directly at the source.
Inside the demonstration environment, companies can experiment with robotic systems designed to carry out a range of monitoring tasks. These include autonomous patrol of factory floors, detection of safety risks such as workers missing protective equipment and identification of unusual conditions in equipment or surroundings.
Some robots demonstrated by TCS resemble quadrupeds designed to navigate complex factory environments. These machines are equipped with technologies including depth cameras, LiDAR and environmental sensors that allow them to observe conditions and collect data in real time.
The systems analyze information locally through edge computing rather than sending all data to remote cloud servers. This approach allows faster decision making in environments where immediate responses may be required.
AI systems built to assist workers rather than replace them
Although robotics and automation often raise concerns about job displacement, the company says the systems are designed to support human workers rather than eliminate them.
The approach relies on what technology developers describe as a human-in-the-loop model. In this structure, AI tools handle monitoring and early detection tasks while human employees make larger operational decisions.
For example, AI systems may detect a piece of machinery showing early signs of failure or identify unusual temperature patterns within a production environment. Human technicians can then investigate and determine the proper response.
The goal is to improve workplace safety and operational efficiency while keeping people in control of major decisions.
Expansion plan aims for 13 global centers
The Michigan facility also reflects a broader expansion plan by TCS and Google Cloud.
The Troy location marks the seventh Gemini Experience Centre in the global network. The companies plan to increase that number to 13 centers by the end of 2026.
Achieving that target would require opening six additional locations within the year, a pace that signals growing demand for enterprise AI solutions.
The centers operate as part of the TCS Pace innovation network, which connects businesses with universities, startups and research partners to test emerging technologies.
In 2025, the partnership between TCS and Google Cloud expanded to include Gemini Enterprise, a platform that allows companies to build custom AI agents and integrate them into industries such as banking, retail and manufacturing.
Michigan offers strategic location for factory innovation
The decision to place the new center in Michigan reflects the region’s long-standing role in the manufacturing industry.
The state is home to major automotive companies and an extensive network of suppliers, making it an ideal environment for testing factory automation technologies.
TCS has already maintained a presence in the area. In 2021 the company opened another innovation site in Troy focused on automotive and industrial technologies.
With the addition of the new physical AI center, the company aims to provide manufacturers with a space to experiment with advanced robotics systems before implementing them in real production environments.
Tata Consultancy Services reported revenue of more than $29 billion in its most recent fiscal year and employs over 600,000 people worldwide. The company’s growing investments in artificial intelligence signal how quickly industrial automation is becoming a major focus for global technology providers.
