Jai’Len Josey’s debut album Serial Romantic is officially out now via Def Jam Recordings, and it arrives as one of the most fully
realized R&B introductions in recent memory. The 13-track project blends R&B, ghettotech, cinematic pop, and soul into a cohesive
psychological love story one that Josey describes as genre-bending and drawn entirely from real life.
The album is executive produced by Grammy Award winner Tricky Stewart, with Josey also producing throughout. Additional
production contributions come from The-Dream, Leon Thomas, Theron Thomas, and Ben Parris. The project was recorded in Atlanta
and Los Angeles throughout 2025.
From Broadway to Def Jam
Josey’s path to this moment is anything but conventional. She first gained attention playing “Pearl” in The SpongeBob Musical: Live
on Stage! on Broadway before pivoting to a solo music career. She honed her sound on the Illustrations EP in 2020 and the
SOUTHERN DELICACY EP in 2023, developing a signature style that fuses theatrical instincts with emotionally raw songwriting.
Her behind-the-scenes work is equally impressive. She co-wrote two songs on Ari Lennox’s Age/Sex/Location, including the Gold-
certified “Pressure.” Lennox later brought her along as a supporting act on the Age/Sex/Location Tour. Coverage from Billboard,
ESSENCE, VIBE, NME, EBONY, and Okayplayer followed, and co-signs from artists including Doechii, Coco Jones, Kehlani, and SZA
helped build anticipation for this debut.
What ‘Serial Romantic’ is about
The album tells the story of Josey’s alter ego, also named Josey, who spends her life shapeshifting into different personas to earn love.
She cycles through identities and behaviors, convinced that performing well enough will make her chosen. By the album’s end, she
realizes she has been the only constant in every relationship and that she deserves the love she gives to others.
It is a structure drawn as much from horror and psychological television as it is from R&B tradition. Josey cited Black Mirror,
American Horror Story: Coven, and films like The Exorcist and Carrie as reference points, alongside musical influences including
Donny Hathaway, Aretha Franklin, Fleetwood Mac, and The B-52’s.
Key tracks to know
The album’s focus track, “Love Ain’t Shit,” is co-written with The-Dream and produced by Tricky Stewart. Built on a snappy throwback
beat and a delicate keyboard loop, the song captures the frustration of a long-term relationship hitting its limits. It is a moment of
emotional release raw, direct, and instantly memorable.
The title track “Serial Romantic” leans into Detroit house with a pulsating bassline and dramatic strings, reflecting the chaotic energy
of being drawn to multiple people while still needing to find yourself. The closer, “I Believe (Selfish),” strips things back. Josey’s vocals
hover over a sparse arrangement as she arrives at the album’s central revelation: that she deserves to keep some of her love for herself.
Why it matters
Serial Romantic positions Jai’Len Josey as one of the most distinctive voices entering R&B right now. For readers interested in the
broader resurgence of soul-influenced R&B, offers excellent context for where her sound fits in the current landscape.
The album is available to stream on all major platforms now.
