CheapOair data reveals rise in last-minute travel

Last-minute travel booking has officially taken over summer trip planning in the United States. New data from CheapOair, one of the world’s leading online travel agencies, shows that more than 60% of travelers booked their summer trips within 0 to 30 days of departure in both 2024 and 2025. Moreover, that number is expected to hold steady or grow through summer 2026.

The data reflects a clear shift in how people approach travel decisions. Travelers today prioritize flexibility over locking in plans early. Additionally, competitive pricing on last-minute flights makes waiting an increasingly smart financial move for families and couples alike.

Last-minute travel booking now leads all summer planning

The CheapOair data breaks down booking behavior across four windows. Here is how the numbers compare across 2024 and 2025:

  1. Zero to 30 days before departure — 61% in 2024, rising to 62% in 2025
  2. 31 to 60 days before departure — held steady at 18% in both years
  3. 61 to 90 days before departure — accounted for just 9% of total bookings
  4. More than 90 days before departure — dropped slightly from 12% in 2024 to 11% in 2025

Furthermore, the trend lines point in one clear direction. Early planning is declining. Last-minute travel booking is growing. Consequently, travel agencies and airlines are adjusting how they price and market seats to match this behavioral shift.

Yuvraj Datta, Chief Supply and Revenue Officer at CheapOair, says the company sees this pattern continuing. Travelers are now comfortable waiting because they trust that value will still be available close to departure. Therefore, the old advice to book months in advance no longer applies to most summer travelers.

Where people are heading this summer

The CheapOair data also highlights which destinations are gaining the most momentum for summer 2026. Domestically, travelers are gravitating toward a mix of major cities and warm-weather destinations. Internationally, several emerging markets are drawing significant interest alongside classic favorites.

Top domestic destinations trending on CheapOair this summer include New York City, Orlando, Miami, Seattle, San Juan, and Las Vegas. Each of these cities appeals to a different type of traveler, from families seeking theme parks to couples looking for nightlife and beaches.

On the international side, trending destinations include Manila in the Philippines, San Salvador in El Salvador, Tirana in Albania, London in the United Kingdom, Mexico City in Mexico, and Toronto in Ontario, Canada. Additionally, the mix of emerging and established markets reflects how broadly last-minute travel booking has spread across income levels and travel styles.

Why travelers are waiting longer to book

Several factors are driving the rise of last-minute travel booking in 2026. First, economic uncertainty has made many consumers reluctant to commit to expensive plans months in advance. However, that hesitation has not killed the desire to travel. Instead, it has simply pushed the decision closer to the departure date.

Second, pricing technology has made last-minute deals more competitive than ever before. Travelers who wait now often find fares comparable to or better than those available months earlier. Moreover, flexible fare options and easy cancellation policies have removed much of the risk that once made late booking feel dangerous.

Third, remote work and flexible schedules give more travelers the ability to decide on a trip with short notice. Therefore, the last-minute booking window has expanded beyond young solo travelers to include families, couples, and retirees as well.
