Book Now or Later? CheapOair Data Shows Travelers Are Waiting It Out for Summer 2026
Last-minute bookings continue to dominate the summer travel season, with over 60% of CheapOair travelers in 2024 and 2025 securing trips within 0–30 days of departure: a trend expected to hold steady this year.
NEW YORK CITY (March X, 2026) – Summer travel planning in 2026 is expected to be increasingly last-minute, according to CheapOair, one of the world’s leading online travel agencies. Yuvraj Datta, Chief Supply and Revenue Officer at CheapOair, notes that families and couples are likely to continue booking their summer getaways within 0–30 days of departure, as travelers prioritize flexibility and value in today’s evolving travel landscape.
“Travelers today are more comfortable waiting to book until closer to departure, prioritizing flexibility without compromising on price or experience,” says Datta. “With more than 60% of bookings happening within 30 days of travel, we’re seeing a clear shift toward spontaneous, value-driven decision-making that is expected to define summer travel in 2026.”
Last-Minute Bookings Lead the Way – A growing share of summer travel bookings is taking place within 0 to 30 days of departure. In 2024, 61% of travelers booked within this window, rising slightly to 62% in 2025, further cementing last-minute planning as the primary booking behavior among CheapOair customers.
Mid-Range Booking Windows Remain Consistent – Reservations made 31 to 60 days in advance have held steady year-over-year, representing 18% of total bookings in both 2024 and 2025. While still a meaningful segment, this window continues to trail significantly behind last-minute booking activity.
Long-Term Planning Continues to Slip – Bookings made 61 to 90 days out account for just 9% of total volume, while trips secured more than 90 days in advance dipped slightly from 12% in 2024 to 11% in 2025, underscoring an ongoing move away from early trip planning.
Momentum Expected to Carry Into 2026 – Based on consistent patterns observed over the past two years, CheapOair expects summer 2026 travel to remain heavily driven by short booking windows, as flexibility continues to be a key priority for today’s travelers.
Destinations Gaining Momentum This Summer – CheapOair data points to a wide range of destinations rising in popularity. Across the U.S., travelers are gravitating toward cities like New York City, Orlando, Miami, Seattle, San Juan, and Las Vegas, with choices often influenced by travel style and companions. Internationally, trending destinations include Manila, Philippines; San Salvador, El Salvador; Tirana, Albania; London, UK; Mexico City, Mexico; and Toronto, Ontario.
Value Continues to Shape Booking Behavior – In today’s travel environment, many consumers remain hesitant to lock in plans too far in advance, prioritizing flexibility where possible. At the same time, competitive pricing trends are making last-minute bookings increasingly appealing, reinforcing that travelers may still find strong value without planning months ahead.
