Meta launches Instagram instants to take on Snapchat

Meta has officially unveiled Instagram Instants, a new camera-first feature designed to make photo sharing more spontaneous, private and authentic among friends.

The feature introduces disappearing real-time photo sharing directly within Instagram while also launching as a standalone companion app in select countries. With Instants, Meta is making its clearest move yet to compete directly with Snap Inc. and its signature disappearing-photo experience.

What is Instagram Instants?

Instagram Instants focuses on temporary, unedited photo sharing between close friends and mutual followers.

Unlike traditional Instagram Stories or feed posts, users cannot upload old gallery images or heavily edit photos before sending them. Instead, the feature encourages users to capture moments live using the camera interface.

Meta says the goal is to create more natural and casual interactions while reducing the pressure associated with polished social media content.

In addition to the Instagram integration, Meta has also launched a dedicated Instants app for Android and iOS users in select markets. The app connects directly to existing Instagram accounts and offers fast access to the Instants camera.

How Instagram Instants works

Users can access Instants either through their Instagram inbox or through the standalone app.

After opening the feature, users immediately capture a live photo using the camera. While captions are allowed, editing tools remain intentionally limited.

Once the image is captured, it can be shared with Close Friends or mutual followers. Recipients receive the photo inside their inbox through stacked image previews.

Users can react with emojis, send replies or respond by sharing their own Instants.

The photos automatically disappear after being viewed and become inaccessible after 24 hours.

Screenshot blocking and undo feature add privacy protections

One of the biggest privacy-focused additions is screenshot protection.

Meta says Instagram Instants blocks screenshots and screen recordings to prevent recipients from saving shared photos without permission.

The feature also includes an undo option, allowing users to remove a photo before the recipient opens it.

In addition, shared Instants are stored in a private archive visible only to the sender for up to one year.

Users can later turn archived Instants into recap posts and optionally share them as Instagram Stories.

Teen safety tools remain active

Meta confirmed that existing Teen Account protections and Family Center supervision settings will automatically extend to Instants.

That includes:

Sleep mode restrictions

Daily usage limits

Content filters

Parental supervision notifications

Reporting and restriction tools

The company says these protections are designed to maintain safer experiences for younger users as disappearing-content features continue growing in popularity.

Meta intensifies competition with Snapchat

The launch of Instagram Instants highlights Meta’s continued push into private and short-form communication features traditionally associated with Snapchat.

Over the years, Instagram has introduced several Snapchat-inspired tools, including Stories, disappearing messages and close friends sharing. However, Instants places an even stronger emphasis on live, temporary and minimally edited interactions.

The addition of a standalone app also signals that Meta may view Instants as more than just another Instagram feature.

Global rollout already underway

Meta has already started rolling out Instants globally inside Instagram.

However, the standalone Instants app remains limited to select countries during the initial launch phase.

The company has not yet confirmed when broader global app availability will begin.
