The Off Campus Season 2 cast change is now official. Showrunner Louisa Levy confirmed in a recent interview with TV Guide that Josh Heuston will not return as Justin Kohl in the upcoming Prime Video season. Moreover, the reason is a scheduling conflict rather than a creative decision. Furthermore, Levy left the door open for a future return, saying she would not rule out bringing Justin back if the right story presents itself.
Justin Kohl played a key role in Season 1 as a fellow music student who developed feelings for Hannah Wells before she ultimately ended up with hockey star Garrett Graham. Consequently, his absence removes one of the central love triangle characters from the show’s next chapter. Additionally, Levy noted that Justin’s eventual love interest from the book series, a character named Stella, was never introduced on screen, leaving room for that thread to continue at some point.
Who takes center stage in Season 2
The Off Campus Season 2 cast change opens the door for a new central couple. Season 1 spent significant time setting up two supporting characters for the next chapter. Hannah’s friend Allie Hayes, played by Mika Abdalla, and Garrett’s hockey teammate Dean Di Laurentis, played by Stephen Kalyn, are expected to lead the romantic storyline in Season 2.
That choice represents a notable departure from Elle Kennedy’s original book series. Furthermore, that decision will surprise readers who expected the show to follow the source material more closely in sequence.
Levy explained the reasoning behind the change. She said the goal was always to maintain momentum and keep the television story moving forward. Additionally, she wanted to deliver the satisfying conclusion for Hannah and Garrett while leaving enough open questions to drive Season 2 forward. Consequently, the structural shift serves the needs of a streaming series better than a strict adaptation of the second book would have.
What Off Campus Season 1 established
Season 1 focused on the romance between music students Hannah Wells and Justin Kohl, which evolved into a love triangle when Hannah developed feelings for hockey player Garrett Graham. Moreover, the show drew a dedicated audience from both the existing fanbase of the book series and new viewers discovering the story on screen.
Each season of the show focuses on a different couple, which gives the series flexibility that most romance adaptations do not have. Furthermore, that format allows the creative team to shift central characters while still maintaining continuity across the broader world of Briar University. Consequently, Allie and Dean becoming the Season 2 leads fits the show’s established structure even if it skips a book in the process.
Ella Bright plays Hannah Wells. Josh Heuston played Justin Kohl. Belmont Cameli plays Garrett Graham. Additionally, Mika Abdalla as Allie Hayes and Stephen Kalyn as Dean Di Laurentis both featured in Season 1 in supporting roles that now position them for larger arcs in the upcoming season.
What to expect from Season 2
No official plot description for Season 2 has been released at this time. However, the setup established in Season 1 points clearly toward Allie and Dean navigating the complications of a hockey romance at Briar University. Moreover, the shift to The Score as the source material gives the show a rich foundation with a clear beginning, middle, and end for that couple’s story. Furthermore, Levy has signaled that the season will still honor the emotional beats that fans of the books expect from the Off Campus world.
The possibility of Justin Kohl returning in a future season also adds an ongoing thread that keeps the door open for Heuston without requiring a commitment from either the actor or the production team right now. Additionally, the introduction of Stella as a potential future character gives the writers creative flexibility if scheduling allows for a return down the road.
