A distinguished crowd gathered in downtown Detroit on Thursday June 19 to commemorate a pivotal leadership transition at Morehouse College, one of the nation’s most iconic institutions dedicated to the education of Black men. Hosted by the Detroit Alumni Chapter, the private evening affair honored outgoing President Dr. David A. Thomas and welcomed Dr. F. DuBois Bowman as the College’s 13th president.
Held at Chandelier Detroit, the reception blended celebration and purpose. Beyond acknowledging two academic trailblazers, the event also debuted the William “Bill” McGill President’s Circle, a new annual fundraising effort named after a beloved former chapter president. The initiative aims to raise scholarship dollars for Michigan-based students seeking to attend Morehouse, further cementing Detroit’s role in cultivating future leaders.
The evening offered a moment to reflect on Dr. Thomas’s lasting contributions. Over his seven-year tenure, Morehouse experienced considerable institutional growth, weathered global challenges, and stayed rooted in its mission of producing socially conscious, high-achieving Black men. His leadership helped guide the College through uncertain times while laying a foundation for long-term resilience and relevance.
Attendees also looked ahead with optimism as Dr. Bowman, a Detroit-area native and nationally respected academic, stepped into the role. Before his appointment, Dr. Bowman served as Dean of the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. His background in public health, biostatistics, and equity-focused education aligns with Morehouse’s evolving vision to prepare leaders who address 21st-century challenges through scholarship, service, and strategy.
The launch of the President’s Circle provided another layer of meaning to the evening. Organizers emphasized the importance of investing in local youth and sustaining the College’s legacy through tangible support. With Michigan continuing to send promising young men to Morehouse, the chapter’s efforts are focused on ensuring that financial barriers do not impede access to opportunity.
Alumni leaders and supporters are now calling on the broader community to contribute to the initiative—whether through corporate sponsorships, individual giving, or sustained engagement with the College’s mission.
