A 9-year-old boy from Plainfield, Illinois, was hospitalized with severe burns after microwaving a popular sensory toy called a Needoh Cube. The injury occurred after he followed a social media trend that suggested heating the toy to make it more pliable. Within seconds, the toy exploded, causing serious burns to the right side of his face.

Loyola University Medical Center reported that the hospital has seen four cases this year involving similar incidents with the same toy. Fortunately, the child’s vision was not permanently affected, and he is recovering well.

How the trend caused harm

The social media challenge involves heating a gel-filled toy in the microwave to soften it. While some children attempt the trend without injury, others, like the 9-year-old, face immediate danger due to the high temperatures inside the microwave. In this case, the heated gel stuck to the child’s face, requiring hospitalization for burns.

Hospital officials emphasized that social media often highlights only the “fun” aspects of these trends, leaving viewers unaware of potential dangers. The boy had learned about the trend indirectly through a friend, demonstrating how quickly unsafe practices can spread among children even without direct exposure to the internet.

Hospital raises awareness amid National Burn Awareness Week

Loyola Medicine used the incident to raise awareness during National Burn Awareness Week. Burn specialists stressed the importance of adult supervision when children interact with potentially hazardous items or follow online challenges. Medical professionals also highlighted the need for education about everyday safety, particularly when trends encourage risky behavior.

The hospital noted that minor curiosity can quickly turn into severe injury when children mimic viral trends without understanding the consequences. Their outreach aims to prevent further incidents by encouraging parents to discuss safety and social media responsibility with their children.

A cautionary tale for parents and children

The boy and his family are now advocating for common-sense caution. Officials described the family’s message as a reminder for children to pause and think before acting on social media trends. While many challenges appear harmless or entertaining online, the physical risks can be severe and permanent.

Medical staff emphasized that injuries like these are preventable. The combination of adult supervision, discussion of social media trends, and understanding the potential dangers of household items can help reduce accidents in the home.

Recovery and lessons learned

The child is expected to return to school soon and is reportedly eager to share his experience to prevent similar injuries among friends. His recovery has been swift, and medical professionals expressed optimism about his long-term healing. The family hopes that by sharing the story, parents and children will be more mindful of the real-world risks behind viral online content.

The company that manufactures the Needoh Cube has not yet responded to inquiries regarding safety warnings or guidance for consumers. Meanwhile, Loyola Medicine continues to highlight the dangers of microwaving toys and the broader implications of viral challenges.

This incident underscores how seemingly harmless social media trends can have severe consequences for children and emphasizes the need for proactive communication and supervision.
