Why the Dolphins are parting ways with Tyreek Hill and what it means for 2026

The Miami Dolphins have officially decided to release star wide receiver Tyreek Hill as the team navigates the 2026 offseason. Hill, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in 2025, will not remain on the roster for the final year of his contract, which included nearly $30 million in non-guaranteed salary.

Hill’s extension, signed the previous year, was valued at $90 million, with a final-year cap hit of almost $52 million. The structure of the deal meant much of the money in 2026 was not guaranteed, allowing the Dolphins flexibility as they transition under new head coach Jeff Hafley. Releasing Hill before June 1 results in a $28.2 million dead cap hit for the team.

Hill’s recent seasons and injury

The 31-year-old receiver had a difficult run leading up to his release. In 2025, he finished with 21 catches for 265 yards and a single touchdown, marking the lowest output of his career. His production was already declining from 2024, and the knee injury further complicated his ability to contribute on the field. Despite this, Hill has not suggested retirement and remains focused on recovery.

Off-field challenges and public scrutiny

Hill has faced off-field scrutiny in recent months, including allegations of domestic incidents. While these matters are part of the broader conversation surrounding the player, Hill has emphasized focusing on football and family life during his recovery. He is reportedly walking without a brace and remains intent on returning to play.

Dolphins’ roster strategy and future outlook

The Dolphins’ move is part of a larger reshaping of the team under new leadership. Hafley, who replaced Mike McDaniel in January, is adjusting the roster ahead of a critical 2026 season. Releasing Hill provides financial flexibility and allows the Dolphins to prioritize other areas as they seek to improve performance and maintain competitive depth.

Other offseason moves include re-evaluating contracts and cap allocations, which could signal additional changes to Miami’s roster. The team’s decisions reflect a commitment to long-term planning and aligning player performance with financial strategy.

Hill’s next steps

Although released, Hill remains a notable figure in NFL discussions. His injury recovery and ability to return to form will likely determine his next opportunity in the league. Teams evaluating free-agent wide receivers may monitor his progress closely, considering both talent and past performance.
