This Sunday, February 22, marks National Margarita Day, and restaurants nationwide are rolling out some of the year’s most enticing deals. From classic lime margaritas to frozen specialty cocktails, diners can enjoy discounted drinks that start at $2.22, a playful nod to the holiday’s date.

Major chains and local favorites alike are participating, offering an array of options for both casual celebrators and cocktail enthusiasts. The event provides an accessible way for people across the U.S. to enjoy the iconic tequila-based drink without breaking the bank.

Top deals at major chains

Bahama Breeze Island Grille is leading the way with $2.22 classic margaritas all day. The price is perfectly timed to match the date, February 22, making it a unique draw for customers. Chili’s is offering three different options: a $5 Tequila Classic, a $6 StrawEddy Margarita of the Month, and a $7 premium Patrón Frozen Margarita.

Margaritas Mexican Restaurant will celebrate with $6 original and classic margaritas all day. Those looking to splurge on premium tequila flights will find select options at Bahama Breeze, adding variety for different budgets and tastes.

Budget-friendly options and local spots

Chains like Miller’s Ale House and The Greene Turtle are also joining the celebration. Miller’s Ale House offers $2.22 margaritas at select locations for dine-in customers, while The Greene Turtle features $2 drinks, with meal purchases often required. BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse is running happy hour specials throughout the day.

Local taco joints and independent Mexican restaurants are also participating, offering frozen margaritas starting as low as $3.99. Some establishments are extending deals across the weekend, allowing patrons to enjoy the celebration from Friday through Monday.

Origins of National Margarita Day

National Margarita Day was founded in 2008 by Todd McCalla to honor the cocktail’s enduring popularity. The holiday cleverly matches the date 2/22 with a pricing gimmick for drinks, creating an instant marketing connection. The margarita itself combines tequila, lime juice, and triple sec and is celebrated as a quintessential taste of summer in a glass.

Historians trace the cocktail’s invention to 1936 in Mexico, where it was reportedly created by Danny Negrete for his girlfriend, Margarita, at a hotel in Tehuacán. The drink likely evolved from tequila shots accompanied by lime and salt, eventually transforming into the iconic cocktail enjoyed worldwide today.

 Tips for celebrating safely

Patrons are encouraged to call ahead to confirm participating locations, as deals can vary. Many discounts apply to dine-in only, so arriving early is recommended to avoid crowds. Some restaurants offer limited-edition margarita flavors and special flight packages exclusive to the weekend, providing even more options for enthusiasts.

National Margarita Day is not just a chance for drinks on the cheap—it’s a cultural celebration of one of the most enduring cocktails, bringing friends, families, and communities together across the country.

With options starting at $2.22 and topping out around $7 for premium selections, this Sunday promises a fun, flavorful, and festive way to toast the iconic margarita.
