More than two decades after the original film turned horror clichés into comedy gold, the Scary Movie franchise is returning with familiar faces and a fresh wave of satire. The long-running parody series will arrive in theaters on June 5, 2026, bringing together several of the stars who helped define the early 2000s comedy era.
The new installment reunites four of the franchise’s most recognizable performers. 1. Marlon Wayans, 2. Shawn Wayans, 3. Anna Faris, and 4. Regina Hall return to the roles that helped make the original films a pop culture staple.
Their comeback marks a full-circle moment for the series, which first debuted in 2000 and quickly became known for its over-the-top humor and relentless parody of popular horror movies. The upcoming film revisits that formula while taking aim at the latest wave of horror storytelling dominating theaters and streaming platforms.
The Core Four face another masked killer

The new story takes place decades after the characters first escaped a masked killer similar to the iconic Ghostface figure from Scream. Now, the familiar group finds themselves once again pulled into a chaotic world where horror tropes collide with absurd comedy.
Marlon Wayans returns as Shorty, Shawn Wayans reprises his role as Ray, Anna Faris steps back into the role of Cindy, and Regina Hall once again plays Brenda. The group’s reunion forms the backbone of the film, bringing the franchise’s signature dynamic back to the screen.
This time around, the characters navigate a landscape packed with modern horror trends. The film openly mocks everything from remakes and reboots to sequels, prequels and so-called legacy films that revive classic stories with new generations of characters.
The franchise targets modern horror trends

The original Scary Movie films built their popularity by lampooning blockbuster horror hits of their time. The new entry expands that idea by tackling the growing list of horror subgenres and storytelling styles that have appeared over the past decade.
The film’s plot reportedly dives into the world of reboots, spin-offs and cinematic universes while poking fun at the industry’s fascination with reviving familiar intellectual property. Even the idea of a “final chapter” is treated as part of the joke.
Along the way, the characters encounter familiar horror setups that spiral into comedic chaos. The franchise’s approach remains focused on exaggerating classic scares while flipping them into punchlines.
A larger cast joins the returning stars

While the four returning leads form the heart of the new film, the cast expands to include several additional actors. Damon Wayans Jr., Gregg Wayans and Kim Wayans are among the performers joining the project alongside Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Dave Sheridan and Heidi Gardner.
Other cast members include Lochlyn Munro, Olivia Rose Keegan, Ruby Snowber, Savannah Lee Nassif, Sydney Park, Benny Zielke and Cameron Scott Roberts.
Behind the scenes, the production also brings together several members of the Wayans family, who were instrumental in shaping the early films. Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Keenen Ivory Wayans are all involved creatively in the project along with Craig Wayans and Rick Alvarez.
A familiar creative team returns to the franchise

The film is directed by Michael Tiddes, who previously collaborated with Marlon Wayans on several comedy projects. The screenplay is written by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans and Rick Alvarez.
The project also includes executive producers Jonathan Glickman, Thom Zadra, Alexandra Loewy and Marsha L. Swinton.
The original characters were created by Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans alongside Buddy Johnson and Phil Beauman, with additional contributions from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer.
A comedy franchise returns to theaters

The return of Scary Movie arrives during a time when nostalgia-driven sequels and revivals have become a major trend in Hollywood. The new installment leans directly into that reality, turning the idea of franchise revivals into part of its comedic premise.
Fans of the original series will see the familiar characters placed in situations that reflect the modern entertainment landscape while still delivering the chaotic humor that defined the earlier films.
When the film arrives on June 5, 2026, audiences can expect the franchise to once again push boundaries as it revisits the world of horror parody.
