Patriots sign Romeo Doubs to bold 4-year, $70M deal

The New England Patriots are making it clear that their Super Bowl LX appearance last month was not a fluke, and they have no intention of standing still this offseason. The team is signing former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs to a four-year contract worth roughly $70 million, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The move represents one of the more aggressive investments New England has made at the wide receiver position in recent memory, and it signals a genuine commitment to surrounding second-year quarterback Drake Maye with legitimate weapons heading into the 2026 season.

Who is Romeo Doubs

Doubs, 25, spent his entire four-year career in Green Bay before hitting the open market this offseason. His statistical profile is that of a reliable and ascending receiver rather than an established star, as he has never surpassed 724 receiving yards in a single regular season. Across 59 career games and 50 starts, he has hauled in 202 receptions for 2,424 yards at a 12.0-yard average, adding 21 touchdowns along the way. Those numbers earned him a hefty payday, though it is his playoff production that may have been the deciding factor for New England’s front office.

Playoff pedigree sets him apart

Where Doubs has genuinely separated himself from comparable receivers is in postseason play. In four career playoff games, he has caught 20 passes for 371 yards and two touchdowns, demonstrating an ability to elevate his performance when the stakes are highest. His most recent showcase came in the Packers’ playoff loss to the Chicago Bears this past January, when he posted eight catches for 124 yards and a touchdown in a losing effort. For a Patriots team that has now reached the Super Bowl and understands what it takes to win in January, adding a receiver with that kind of big-game résumé carries real weight.

Filling the void left by Diggs

The timing of the Doubs signing comes directly on the heels of New England’s decision to release veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs last week, which created an obvious void in the Patriots’ passing offense. Doubs steps into a receiver room that currently includes Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, Demario Douglas, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism III. None of those names carry the same upside or track record as Doubs, making him the clear top option in the group from day one of his arrival in New England.

A possible A.J. Brown complication

The Doubs signing does introduce an interesting wrinkle into the Patriots’ broader offseason plans. New England has been among the teams connected to Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown, a potential blockbuster addition that would dramatically elevate Maye’s supporting cast. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel previously coached Brown during his early career with the Tennessee Titans, giving that connection a personal dimension. According to Rapoport, however, landing Doubs could complicate any potential trade for Brown, raising questions about whether the team is prepared to commit major resources to two receivers at once.

Building the roster on multiple fronts

The Doubs deal is part of a broader spending push the Patriots have undertaken this offseason. On Monday alone, New England added offensive guard Alijah Vera-Tucker on a three-year, $42 million deal, fullback Reggie Gilliam on a three-year contract worth up to $12 million, and defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones on a three-year, $39.5 million agreement. The message from the organization is unmistakable: this team is building to compete now.
