Deion Sanders made a visible and energetic return to the sidelines as he continues to balance his health journey with the demands of leading the Colorado Buffaloes.

During Colorado’s spring game at Folsom Field, Sanders was actively engaged throughout, observing players, offering guidance and connecting with media. His presence carried added meaning after a year marked by significant health challenges that had previously limited his time with the program.

Only after the scrimmage did Sanders reveal that he had recently undergone another medical procedure tied to ongoing blood clot concerns. The issue briefly kept him away from team activities, though he has since returned and resumed his role.

A return shaped by 16 surgeries

Sanders’ latest procedure is part of a longer medical journey that has unfolded over several years.

  1. His circulation issues first surfaced in 2021 while he was coaching at Jackson State.
  2. The condition reappeared in 2023, leading to additional vascular treatment shortly after his move to Colorado.
  3. In 2025, he underwent a major operation to remove blood clots, marking his 16th surgery related to circulation complications.

Despite the repeated procedures, Sanders has remained committed to his responsibilities, often returning to work shortly after each medical setback.

Navigating multiple health challenges

In addition to circulation issues, Sanders has faced other serious medical concerns that have shaped his recent years.

  1. In 2025, he underwent treatment for bladder cancer, which required him to step away from the team for an extended period.
  2. The condition was later successfully treated, allowing him to resume coaching duties.
  3. He also experienced physical changes during recovery, including weight loss, but has since regained strength ahead of the new season.

These challenges have added complexity to his coaching tenure, yet he has continued to maintain a visible presence whenever possible.

What the spring game revealed

The spring game offered an early look at a Colorado team undergoing another major transition.

  1. The roster now includes 59 new players following a 3-9 season, signaling a continued rebuild under Sanders.
  2. Transfer wide receiver Danny Scudero made an early impact, connecting on a touchdown during the opening drive.
  3. The scrimmage concluded with a defensive highlight, as Maurice Williams secured a late interception to seal a narrow win.

The performance provided a glimpse of potential as new players begin to settle into the program’s system.

Honoring a loss within the program

The spring game also carried a moment of reflection as the team honored the memory of Dominiq Ponder.

  1. Players wore a “DP 7” patch in tribute to the late quarterback.
  2. Ponder had been set to wear the number during spring practice before his passing.
  3. The program recognized his legacy with a tribute, while his family continues efforts to promote awareness among student-athletes.

The tribute added an emotional layer to the day, underscoring the close-knit nature of the team.

Pushing for change in college football

Beyond the field, Sanders used the moment to advocate for adjustments to the structure of spring games.

  1. He expressed interest in introducing inter-team matchups to increase competitiveness.
  2. A previous request to face another program was denied under current NCAA rules.
  3. He continues to support the idea, suggesting it could improve the experience for both players and fans.

His push reflects a broader effort to evolve how teams prepare during the offseason.

Looking ahead to a new season

As Colorado prepares for the upcoming campaign, Sanders appears focused on both his health and the team’s development.

His return to active coaching signals stability for a program that has undergone multiple transitions in recent years. With a revamped roster and renewed energy, the Buffaloes are working toward a stronger showing in the season ahead.

For Sanders, the moment represents more than just another offseason. It is a continuation of a journey defined by resilience, adaptability and a commitment to moving forward despite ongoing challenges.
