More than two decades after the original Super Troopers became one of comedy’s most beloved cult films, the highway patrolmen of Broken Lizard are back for a third run. The official trailer for Super Troopers 3 dropped April 20, 2026, and it wasted absolutely no time reminding fans exactly why this franchise has endured as long as it has pure, unfiltered chaos delivered with a straight face and a badge.
The film opens in theaters on Aug. 7, 2026, and if the trailer is any indication, audiences are in for the most ambitious and absurd entry in the series yet.
A wedding, a scheme and a drug ring walk into a trailer
The plot this time around centers on Farva, whose larger-than-life personality has always been the unpredictable engine of the franchise, and his engagement to Thorny’s sister described as wildly over-the-top and set against an Indian wedding backdrop that looks as colorful and chaotic as anything the series has produced. Thorny, predictably, is not thrilled about the arrangement and begins scheming to derail the relationship entirely.
Layered on top of that family drama is a far more serious problem. The Super Troopers find themselves on the trail of a dangerous new drug ring, forcing the team to juggle personal loyalties, family politics and actual police work all at once. The combination of high-stakes comedy and familiar ensemble energy is exactly what fans of the original films have been waiting for.
The Broken Lizard crew returns in full force
What makes the Super Troopers franchise work has always been its core ensemble, and Super Troopers 3 brings the full Broken Lizard lineup back together. Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske all return, along with Brian Cox and Marisa Coughlan, who were both part of earlier entries in the series.
Joining them this time is a notably expanded supporting cast that includes Nat Faxon, Chace Crawford, Andrew Dismukes, Hannah Simone, Iqbal Theba, Sakina Jaffrey, Jon Rudnitsky and Lisa Gilroy a mix of established comedy talent and fresh faces that suggests the film is aiming for a broader audience without losing the scrappy, irreverent spirit that made the original so enduring.
Chandrasekhar back in the director’s chair
Jay Chandrasekhar, who has directed all three Super Troopers films, returns behind the camera once again, ensuring a continuity of tone and style that fans of the series will immediately recognize. The script is written by the Broken Lizard collective, staying true to the group’s signature approach of building absurdist comedy around surprisingly tight ensemble work. Rich Perello, a longtime collaborator with the group, serves as producer.
The decision to anchor the new film around a cross-cultural wedding is a smart creative swing. It gives the story a built-in emotional center while opening the door to the kind of fish-out-of-water comedy the Broken Lizard crew has always excelled at.
What to expect when it hits theaters
Super Troopers 3 arrives in theaters on Aug. 7, 2026, placing it squarely in the heart of the summer moviegoing season. It is not yet available for streaming. For a franchise that built its original following largely through word of mouth and home video, a wide theatrical release feels like a meaningful moment and a sign that the cult has grown considerably since 2001.
