A select group got an early tour of the Chicago landmark ahead of its June 19 grand opening, with tickets going on sale to the public this week

Obama Presidential Center tickets go on sale Wednesday, and the first people inside say the wait is worth it. On Monday, May 4, a select group received an invite-only tour of the museum tower and the forum building at the Jackson Park campus in Chicago. Cameras were not permitted inside, but visitors came out emotional, inspired and eager to share what they experienced.

What early visitors found inside

The soft opening gave guests access to two key spaces: the museum tower and the forum building, which houses the Hadiya Pendleton Atrium. The tour ran about an hour and a half, though most visitors stayed longer.

Several guests described the experience as deeply moving. One visitor said she teared up taking in the full scope of the Obamas’ impact. Another called it fascinating, noting that the center goes far beyond a simple presidential museum. It traces the broader history of the United States, its development over time and the leadership roles both Barack and Michelle Obama held. Former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, who served in the Obama administration, also attended. He called the experience beyond any expectations and said the installations remind visitors of the power each person holds to drive change.

A vision bigger than a museum

Ten years ago, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama selected Jackson Park as the site for the center. From the start, they said they wanted the space to be more than a place to store mementos from his presidency. Monday’s soft opening suggested that vision has taken shape. Duncan said the spirit of the center reflects a genuine effort to inspire hope, particularly at a moment when the country faces serious challenges.

Community response and concerns

Reaction from the surrounding South Side neighborhood has been largely positive. One nearby resident said she loves what the center represents and believes it will bring real improvement to the area. However, some community members have raised concerns about gentrification and whether the increased attention and investment will displace long-time residents. Those tensions remain part of the broader conversation as the grand opening approaches.

Work on the campus continues. Outside the buildings, crews are still completing landscaping, paving and artwork installation. Inside, the Obama Presidential Center tickets experience is nearly ready for the public.

How to get tickets and what comes next

Obama Presidential Center tickets go on sale Wednesday. The grand opening is set for June 19, which falls on Juneteenth. The date is a deliberate and meaningful choice, tying the center’s public debut to one of the most significant dates in American history.

The soft opening served as a final rehearsal for staff. Based on early visitor reactions, the center appears ready to deliver on everything the Obamas promised when they first announced it a decade ago.
