Nicki Minaj says frustration with Democratic leaders and support from Republican figures played a major role in her political shift toward MAGA politics.
In a new interview with Time magazine, Minaj explained why she publicly embraced support for Donald Trump after years of keeping her views private.
According to Minaj, one turning point came after repeated swatting incidents targeted her Los Angeles home between 2022 and 2023. She claimed she attempted to contact Gavin Newsom for assistance but felt ignored.
Minaj said Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna later helped connect her with law enforcement and private security after another swatting incident in 2025. She told Time that the support encouraged her to become more vocal about her political beliefs.
The rapper also criticized comments made by Barack Obama during the 2024 election cycle. Minaj described remarks aimed at Black male voters as condescending and said the speech added to her frustration with Democratic politics.
Nicki Minaj also targets Jay-Z and Roc Nation
Minaj additionally blamed Jay-Z and Roc Nation for contributing to her political transformation.
She argued that Jay-Z’s influence within the music industry discouraged artists from expressing opposing opinions publicly. Minaj has previously accused Roc Nation of attempting to damage her career, though the company has not publicly responded to those allegations.
According to the interview, Minaj believes many celebrities privately share similar political views but are afraid to speak openly because of backlash within the entertainment industry.
Past vaccine controversy resurfaces
During the interview, Minaj also defended controversial comments she made in 2021 regarding COVID-19 vaccines.
At the time, she faced criticism after posting claims about vaccine side effects involving a relative’s friend in Trinidad. Health officials publicly disputed the statement and described it as misinformation.
Minaj revisited the controversy in the interview and argued she had been unfairly attacked for raising questions.
More political appearances could follow
Minaj has increasingly appeared alongside Trump administration officials in recent months.
She attended a United Nations-related event discussing violence against Christians in Nigeria and later appeared at several Trump-connected public events. She also suggested she would campaign for Republican candidates during future elections if asked.
The rapper told Time she believes more celebrities may eventually become open about conservative political views.
“Sometimes you just need one brave person,” Minaj said during the interview.
