Katie O’Connell, principal of Trout Creek Academy in St. Johns County, found herself at the center of public scrutiny after a lyric from rapper Fetty Wap’s 2015 hit “Trap Queen” appeared in the school’s yearbook and was attributed to her.
The unexpected appearance of the quote quickly drew attention from parents and community members. Soon afterward, district officials placed O’Connell on paid administrative leave while they reviewed the situation.
The yearbook quote triggered concerns
The controversy began when families noticed a statement printed on one of the opening pages of the yearbook beneath a photo of the school.
The phrase was attributed to O’Connell and closely resembled a lyric from Fetty Wap’s chart-topping song. As a result, some parents questioned whether the message was directed toward families who had previously raised concerns about the school.
The issue quickly gained traction online. Consequently, screenshots circulated across social media platforms before school administrators could respond publicly.
The principal denies approving the message
O’Connell maintains that she neither wrote nor approved the quote.
According to her account, she reviewed the yearbook before publication and approved earlier versions that did not contain the statement. Furthermore, she said her assistant principal also reviewed the book before it was finalized.
The principal stated that she only learned about the controversy after receiving screenshots from community members. She believes an error occurred after the approval process had already been completed.
Additional questions emerged after reports indicated that the quote was not present during the final proofreading stage. An email reportedly sent by Assistant Principal Samantha Sawruk supported that claim.
However, conflicting accounts later surfaced regarding whether O’Connell had seen the quote before yearbooks were distributed. Those differing versions have become part of the ongoing review.
The fallout continues to grow
The district informed O’Connell that she would be placed on administrative leave beginning May 20 while officials investigated allegations of inappropriate conduct.
In addition, she received notice that district leaders were moving toward a non-reappointment decision for the 2026-27 school year.
The controversy has affected more than just O’Connell’s employment status. She said the public reaction has led to harassment and even prompted her to report a threat to local authorities.
Meanwhile, supporters have rallied behind the principal. Several parents and community members have pointed to her record at Trout Creek Academy, including strong school performance and teacher retention rates.
Others worry the dispute could negatively affect students and school morale. Therefore, some families have urged district officials to fully examine how the yearbook was produced before assigning blame.
O’Connell has expressed interest in continuing her career in education. However, she indicated she would prefer not to return to Trout Creek Academy.
As the investigation continues, questions remain about how the disputed quote appeared in the yearbook and who was ultimately responsible. Until those answers emerge, the incident remains a source of debate throughout the St. Johns County community.
