The Cardi B Karmelo Anthony verdict reaction arrived quickly after the sentencing and immediately went viral. The rapper posted on X calling the outcome disgusting and suggesting the jury was making an example of Anthony rather than delivering true justice. Moreover, the post reached 10 million views, making it one of the most widely shared celebrity responses to the case. Furthermore, the backlash that followed prompted Cardi to expand her position in a follow-up session on X Spaces.

Anthony, now 19, was found guilty of murder on June 9 by a Collin County jury for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. Moreover, the jury sentenced him to 35 years in prison hours after the verdict, choosing from a sentencing range that ran from two years to life. Additionally, the speed of the deliberations drew criticism from several public figures, including Cardi B, who questioned how jurors could weigh a teenager’s entire future in just three hours. Consequently, the sentencing has become one of the most debated criminal justice moments of the year.

What Cardi B actually said on X Spaces

Cardi B went beyond her initial post to deliver a more detailed argument on X Spaces. She framed her entire position as that of a mother first. Moreover, she said she tells her own sons to always defend themselves and never allow anyone to make them feel diminished. Furthermore, she expressed doubt that Anthony walked into a tent full of football players looking to start a confrontation.

She also raised questions about Austin Metcalf’s physical stature and background. Cardi said Metcalf was reportedly twice Anthony’s size and trained in jiu-jitsu. Moreover, she argued that Metcalf should have taken any grievance to a coach rather than getting physical. Additionally, she acknowledged the legal complexity at play in her argument. Consequently, her position was not a simple defense of Anthony but a broader critique of how the legal system processed what she viewed as a confrontation that escalated.

She also called the 35-year sentence extremely excessive and argued that the charge of manslaughter would have more accurately reflected the circumstances of the case. Moreover, she said the speed of jury deliberations on a case of this magnitude concerned her deeply. Furthermore, she maintained that the outcome sends a troubling message to young Black men navigating similar situations. Consequently, her Spaces session drew a polarized response that reflected the broader public divide the case has generated.

Race and justice at the center of the debate

Cardi B did not shy away from addressing race directly in her extended comments. She said she does not typically frame everything in racial terms but felt the disparity in this case was undeniable. Moreover, she said the outcome would have been dramatically different if a white teenager had been in Anthony’s position. Furthermore, she closed her remarks with advice to her own sons, saying she would now tell them to walk away from any confrontation involving a white person because the law, in her experience, does not offer them equal protection.

Those comments sparked the most significant backlash of the entire post. Supporters agreed that racial disparities in the criminal justice system make her concern legitimate. Moreover, critics argued that her framing misrepresented the facts of the case and excused violence. Additionally, the racial dimension of the debate has followed the Karmelo Anthony case from its earliest days given the racial identities of both Anthony and Metcalf and the speed with which social media shaped public perception of the incident. Consequently, Cardi B’s intervention deepened a conversation that was already one of the most charged of the year.

The broader public debate the case has ignited

The Karmelo Anthony case has generated a level of public debate that goes well beyond the typical celebrity response to a criminal case. Multiple prominent voices have weighed in on both sides of the verdict since the guilty finding on June 9. Moreover, some public figures and legal commentators have argued that the murder charge was appropriate given the evidence presented at trial. Additionally, others have aligned with Cardi B’s view that the sentencing was disproportionate to what they see as a self-defense scenario gone wrong. Consequently, the case has become a flashpoint for larger conversations about race, self-defense law, and how the criminal justice system treats young Black men.

The Metcalf family has not publicly responded to Cardi B’s comments at the time of publication. Moreover, Anthony’s legal team has not issued a statement regarding potential appeals following the sentencing. Additionally, the Collin County District Attorney’s office has not commented on the celebrity reaction to the case. Consequently, the legal chapter of the case has closed for now while the public debate it sparked will likely continue for months.
