Acclaimed filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood has built a reputation for transforming beloved books into powerful films. After directing acclaimed adaptations such as The Secret Life of Bees and The Old Guard, she has now turned her attention to Children of Blood and Bone.
The film adapts Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling 2018 fantasy novel, which became an international sensation after its release. Inspired by West African mythology, the story follows Zélie Adebola, a young woman determined to restore magic to the kingdom of Orïsha after oppressive rulers eliminate it.
Prince-Bythewood described the adaptation as one of the biggest creative challenges of her career because of the novel’s passionate fan base and richly imagined world.
Collaboration with Tomi Adeyemi shaped the film
Rather than adapting the novel independently, Prince-Bythewood worked directly with author Tomi Adeyemi to co-write the screenplay.
Speaking to ESSENCE, the director said the partnership helped preserve the heart of the original story while expanding it for the big screen.
“I spoke to her about my vision of how I wanted to approach it, of bringing all of us into this incredible fantasy world to allow all of us to see ourselves reflected beautifully and heroically,” Prince-Bythewood said.
She added that both creatives immediately shared the same vision for the project.
“It was from that moment that we were completely aligned on vision.”
That collaboration allowed the film to remain faithful to Adeyemi’s work while embracing the cinematic scale needed for a fantasy epic.

A star-studded cast brings Orïsha to life
The adaptation features one of the most impressive ensembles of the year.
Thuso Mbedu stars as Zélie Adebola alongside Damson Idris as Prince Inan. The cast also includes Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Idris Elba, Regina King, Lashana Lynch and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Production took place in South Africa, where Prince-Bythewood reunited with several cast and crew members from The Woman King. Award-winning composer Terence Blanchard also returned to score the film, continuing his successful collaboration with the director.
From bestselling novel to cinematic fantasy
Children of Blood and Bone debuted at No. 1 on The New York Times Best Sellers list after its release in 2018. The novel received widespread critical acclaim and launched a successful fantasy trilogy that attracted readers around the world.
Its blend of West African mythology, magic, political conflict and powerful coming-of-age storytelling quickly established it as one of the defining young adult fantasy novels of the past decade.
The upcoming film aims to introduce the world of Orïsha to an even broader audience while honoring the themes that made the novel so influential.
Prince-Bythewood hopes audiences see themselves on screen
For Prince-Bythewood, the adaptation represents more than a fantasy adventure.
She hopes audiences will see themselves reflected in a world where Black heroes lead an epic story filled with courage, resilience and hope.
By working closely with Tomi Adeyemi and assembling an acclaimed cast, the filmmaker believes Children of Blood and Bone will deliver both spectacle and emotional depth.
As anticipation continues to build, the film stands as one of Paramount Pictures’ most ambitious releases and a landmark adaptation for fans of the bestselling novel.
