The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign turned pink and green Friday evening, marking the arrival of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and roughly 27,000 members gathering for the organization’s 72nd International Boule.
Clark County Commissioner William McCurdy II hosted a ceremony at the landmark at 6 p.m., lighting the sign in Alpha Kappa Alpha’s official colors. The gesture honored the sorority’s more than century-long legacy of service, scholarship and sisterhood. Alpha Kappa Alpha dignitaries attended the event, including International President and CEO Danette Anthony Reed.
What the Boule brings to Las Vegas this week
The illumination opened a full week of programming at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Convention Center, where the Boule runs July 18 through July 24. Members will take part in business meetings, leadership sessions and celebrations throughout the convention.
Community service also anchors much of the week’s schedule. Members plan to pack 15,000 weekend meals for children facing food insecurity. The sorority will also attempt a Guinness World Record for Most People Assembling Hunger Relief Packages, adding a large-scale service milestone to the convention’s agenda.

Why this welcome carries extra meaning
McCurdy described Alpha Kappa Alpha as a cornerstone of service and leadership for more than a century, expressing pride in welcoming its members to Clark County. Reed said the illumination honors the sorority’s 118-year legacy of service, sisterhood, scholarship and leadership, extending a warm welcome to members traveling from around the world.
Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded on the principle of service to all mankind. The pink-and-green glow over Las Vegas Boulevard reflected that mission directly, setting the tone for a week centered on giving back to the very community now hosting the sorority’s international gathering.
