Howard University enrollment officials have begun reinstating incoming freshmen after more than 500 students were unexpectedly removed from the Fall 2026 class over financial aid and enrollment deadlines.
The university confirmed that 46 of the 502 affected students have regained their enrollment status after officials reviewed their individual accounts.
Howard said some students with pending outside scholarships or financial aid may have been included in the update by mistake. Officials continue reviewing records to identify more students who qualify for reinstatement.
Many of the affected students said they had already completed the required paperwork before their enrollment status changed.
Some students submitted scholarship documents weeks earlier but still waited for funding approval. Others said financial aid packages had already covered their tuition costs.
Despite those expectations, Howard notified the students that they no longer held spots in the incoming class. The decision left many families searching for answers just weeks before the semester begins.
Howard University will start its Fall 2026 semester on Aug. 17, giving students limited time to resolve their enrollment issues.
Parents and students have raised concerns about the uncertainty after months of preparing for college.
The university said staff members are reviewing each account individually. Officials want to ensure students with pending financial aid or scholarship payments receive proper consideration.
For many incoming freshmen, gaining admission to Howard University marked the achievement of a lifelong goal.
Known as “The Mecca” because of its historic role among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Howard continues to attract students from across the country and around the world.
As the review process continues, hundreds of students hope the university will restore their admissions before classes begin.
Howard officials have not provided a timeline for completing the remaining reviews. However, the university said it continues working to resolve each case as quickly as possible.
