Chris Brown wants a judge to excuse him from an upcoming court examination tied to his legal dispute with former housekeeper Maria Avila.
Brown filed a motion on August 27 arguing that he should not have to appear at the Van Nuys courthouse. His attorneys cited his touring schedule with Usher and his Nevada residence.
TMZ and Complex reported on the filing after obtaining the court documents.
Brown currently performs with Usher on their joint R&B Tour. The singer says the demanding schedule makes travel to California difficult.
Chris Brown Says Nevada Home Limits Court Appearance
Brown also argues that his residence creates a legal issue.
The singer says he lives in Nevada, more than 150 miles from the Van Nuys courthouse. His filing claims California law limits judgment debtor examinations to locations within 150 miles of a person’s residence.
The proposed examination would allow Avila’s lawyers to seek information about Brown’s finances and assets.
Avila is seeking to collect the money awarded to her after a Los Angeles jury found Brown liable in the civil case involving a 2020 dog attack at his Tarzana home.
Maria Avila Won Nearly $13 Million Judgment
A Los Angeles jury found Brown and his company, Black Pyramid LLC, liable for negligence in June.
The jury awarded Avila $12.9 million in damages. Her sister, Patricia Avila, received $885,000, while Maria’s husband, Oscar Olivo, received $50,000.
The case centers on a December 2020 attack involving Brown’s Caucasian Shepherd, Hades.
Avila suffered serious injuries during the incident while working at Brown’s Tarzana property.
Brown has continued to challenge the judgment. He filed a notice seeking a new trial in August, and a hearing on that request is scheduled for September 22.
Chris Brown Denies Hiding Assets
In his latest filing, Brown also says there is no evidence that he concealed or transferred assets to avoid paying the judgment.
That argument comes as Avila seeks information about his finances and ways to collect the money.
A Los Angeles judge previously ruled that Avila could receive a portion of Brown’s tour income until he satisfies the judgment. TMZ reported that the order could affect earnings from Brown’s ongoing tour with Usher.
Brown is asking the court to reject the request that would require him to appear in person.
Usher Tour Could Continue Into 2027
Brown says his touring commitments could remain an issue for months.
According to his declaration, discussions are underway about extending the R&B Tour internationally through the end of 2027. Complex reported that Brown cited those potential plans when explaining why the examination could create scheduling problems.
The tour has already kept Brown and Usher on the road across North America.
That schedule now intersects with Brown’s ongoing legal battles.
Chris Brown Has September Court Date
Brown still faces a September hearing over his request for a new trial in the Avila case.
For now, the latest filing focuses on whether he must personally attend the financial examination in Van Nuys.
The judge will ultimately decide whether Brown’s arguments about his Nevada residence and touring schedule excuse him from appearing.
Meanwhile, Avila continues efforts to collect the $12.9 million judgment.
The dispute highlights the growing legal and financial pressure surrounding Brown as he continues his joint tour with Usher.
