Some movies pull you in with spectacle. Others make you stay because of the people at the center of the story.
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother does both.
At the center is Mahershala Ali, who plays Latif, a deeply religious hitman whose life changes after his wife dies. Suddenly, he has to care for their three children, including an infant daughter who is still breastfeeding. At the same time, danger is closing in.
Latif travels across Houston with his children as he tries to keep them safe. He is also dealing with grief, questions about his faith and the demands of a life that has already placed him in dangerous situations.
Mahershala Ali gives the story its weight
The first reason to see the film is simple. Mahershala Ali is at the center of it.
Ali brings a quiet intensity to Latif. He plays a man who knows how to survive danger but has no easy answer for the emotional needs of three grieving children. That tension gives the performance its power.
Latif has to keep moving even though he has lost the person who helped hold his family together. His children need him to be strong, but he is grieving, too. The film gives Ali plenty of space to show that conflict.
The suspense never lets up
The second reason is the suspense. Latif and his children face one threat after another as they move through Houston. Each decision carries more weight because the children are with him.
There is little room to relax. Just as the tension starts to settle, another problem arrives. The result is an action driven story that keeps the audience engaged without losing sight of the family at its center.
Grief changes the story
The emotional weight gives the film another layer.
Latif knows how to deal with physical danger. The harder challenge is helping his children understand the loss of their mother while he is struggling with that same loss. The film explores what happens when a parent has to keep going before he has had time to process what happened. Ali makes that struggle feel personal.
Faith becomes part of the conflict
Latif’s religious beliefs also shape the story. He is a devout man whose violent occupation creates an obvious conflict with his faith. After his wife’s death, that conflict becomes harder to ignore.
The film also draws connections between different religious traditions. Those ideas give the story something to explore beyond its action and suspense.
Fatherhood means more than protection
The fifth reason the film works is its approach to fatherhood. Latif cannot protect his children through strength alone. They also need patience, tenderness and attention. That becomes one of the film’s most important challenges. He must keep them alive while also trying to help them cope with losing their mother.
I co-hosted a Detroit area screening with Picture Motion, and seeing the film in a theater made the tension feel even stronger. The big screen suits this story. The action feels immediate, while the quieter family moments give the audience room to sit with Latif’s grief. I never reached for my phone.
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother delivers suspense, emotion and plenty to discuss after the credits. Mahershala Ali gives the story its center, while the film’s questions about faith, family and fatherhood stay with you.
Certified Haute.
If you’re looking for a film that can keep your heart racing while giving you something to think about afterward, this one belongs on your watchlist.
