Four marching bands will meet at Norfolk State University as Missy Elliott celebrates HBCU culture, music and innovation in her home state.
On Oct. 18, 2026, Missy Elliott will bring four HBCU marching bands together at William “Dick” Price Stadium at Norfolk State University. The event begins at 4 p.m.
The Missy Elliott HBCU Band Battle will bring together major marching programs from Virginia and North Carolina. It will also highlight Elliott’s connection to Virginia and her long relationship with music and creativity.
Missy Elliott puts HBCU bands center stage
Norfolk State’s Spartan Legion will host the competition on its home field.
Virginia State University’s Trojan Explosion will also take part. Elizabeth City State University’s Sound of Class will travel from North Carolina. Hampton University’s Marching Force rounds out the lineup. The event gives each band a chance to showcase its sound, movement and musicianship.
HBCU marching bands have long played an important role in Black music culture. Their drumlines, brass sections and visual performances have influenced sounds that reached far beyond college stadiums. That connection is especially fitting for Elliott.
Her music often features strong percussion, big rhythms and call-and-response elements. Those qualities have helped make her work instantly recognizable.
A Virginia homecoming for Missy Elliott
The band battle is part of a larger weekend celebrating Elliott and her Virginia roots.
Missy Elliott Day was created four years ago. Then-Governor Glenn Youngkin recognized the artist during a street-naming ceremony honoring her global impact on music. Elliott grew up in Portsmouth and has continued to represent the Hampton Roads region throughout her career.
She became the first female hip-hop artist inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023. She was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and received the MTV Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award in 2019.
Her return to Virginia now brings her music legacy into a new setting.
Missy Elliott connects music and innovation
The weekend will also include the Missy Elliott Innovation Summit. The summit will bring together college students and high school seniors for conversations about technology, music, education and entrepreneurship.
Students will have the chance to explore emerging ideas and possible career paths. The program connects creative work with practical opportunities in industries that continue to change. That focus reflects a major part of Elliott’s career.
She started as a writer and producer before building her own career as a performer. Her music videos also became known for unusual concepts, bold visuals and creative experimentation.
Four bands, one Norfolk stage
Virginia Natural Gas, Dominion Energy, Micron and the Steven L. Washington Law Firm are supporting the weekend. Their involvement supports programming focused on community investment, education and creative growth.
The HBCU Band Battle will bring that focus to the stadium. Four marching programs will compete while students, families and music fans gather to celebrate HBCU band culture.
Tickets for the Missy Elliott HBCU Band Battle are available through HBCUBandBattle.com. The event gives Elliott a chance to bring her Virginia roots, love of music and focus on young creatives together in one weekend.
