50 Cent has reignited his public commentary on Jay-Z, taking aim at the marketing behind the rapper’s celebrated music catalog. During a conversation with comedian Andrew Schulz for Interview magazine, the rapper questioned why Reasonable Doubt, Jay-Z’s 1996 debut album, receives so much attention today.
The discussion touched on celebrity image, music industry partnerships and the way artists build lasting reputations. Both men also star in the upcoming film Street Fighter.
50 Cent questions Jay-Z’s legacy and marketing
During the interview, 50 criticized Jay-Z’s public image and suggested that some aspects of celebrity branding are carefully planned. He pointed to Jay-Z’s hairstyle and its connection to his association with Tiffany & Co. as an example.
However, 50’s comments went beyond appearance. He also questioned how business partnerships and major touring opportunities can shape public perceptions of an artist’s success.
He brought up Jay-Z’s 2010 Home & Home Tour with Eminem, suggesting that pairing the two rappers helped position them as equally popular figures in hip-hop. His remarks reflected his view that industry connections can influence how audiences measure an artist’s standing.
50 also questioned the renewed celebration of Reasonable Doubt. The album debuted at No. 23 on the Billboard 200 in 1996, a detail he used to challenge the scale of its current recognition.
Meanwhile, Jay-Z’s company, Roc Nation, has marked anniversaries for Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint with promotional campaigns. These efforts have included subway advertisements, pop-up shops, limited-edition vinyl, merchandise and collectibles.
The celebrations have helped bring Jay-Z’s music back into public discussion. Still, 50’s remarks raise questions about the role marketing plays in shaping an artist’s legacy.
50 Cent jokes about Jay-Z and Kanye West at his wedding
50 also brought humor to the conversation during an appearance on Today. When asked about entertainment for his future wedding, he named Jay-Z and Kanye West as potential performers.
He then added a playful condition for Kanye’s appearance, joking that the rapper would have to be free of any ban at the time.
The comment continued 50’s familiar approach to celebrity commentary, mixing humor with pointed remarks about fellow musicians. It also brought Jay-Z and Kanye back into the spotlight as he promotes Street Fighter.
50 Cent discusses Diddy’s Netflix documentary
During the same television appearance, 50 addressed reports that Sean “Diddy” Combs watched his Netflix documentary, Sean Combs: The Reckoning, while in custody.
The rapper highlighted the documentary’s reported international success and defended its portrayal of Combs. He described the project as fair, standing by the work as it continued to draw attention.
Together, the interviews show 50 discussing several major figures in hip-hop while promoting his latest film. His comments about Jay-Z’s album anniversary, potential wedding performers and the documentary have added another chapter to his outspoken public persona.
