FDA issues major Pizza recall over Salmonella fears

A voluntary nationwide recall is now underway for a popular pizza bread product sold across the United States. Champion Foods LLC has recalled specific batches of Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread over concerns about potential salmonella contamination. The recall affects products distributed to retailers nationwide. Consumers are strongly advised to check their homes for any affected items immediately.

Where the contamination concern originated

The recall traces back to an earlier action by California Dairies, Inc. That company issued a recall of its milk powder product. Milk powder is an ingredient in a seasoning blend used in the 5 Cheese Bread. As a result, Champion Foods initiated its own recall as a precautionary measure. Notably, routine testing by the seasoning blend manufacturer returned negative results for salmonella. Nevertheless, the company chose to act out of an abundance of caution rather than wait for confirmed illness reports.

No illnesses reported, but the risk is real

As of the time of publication, no illnesses have been linked to the recalled products. However, health authorities stress that the absence of reported cases does not eliminate the risk. Salmonella infection can cause serious illness. In vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems, it can prove fatal. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, and can appear between six hours and six days after exposure.

How to identify the recalled products

Consumers can identify whether their product falls within the recall by checking the sell-by date printed on the front of the package. The FDA has published a full list of affected sell-by dates on its official website. Anyone who has purchased Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread is encouraged to check that list before consuming the product.

Recalled items should not be eaten. Instead, consumers should discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
