David Leitch, the filmmaker behind Bullet Train and The Fall Guy, returns to theaters with How To Rob A Bank. The action comedy heist film hits theaters on September 4, 2026. Amazon MGM Studios dropped the first official trailer this week. Right away, it signals the kind of high-energy, self-aware entertainment that has become Leitch’s signature.
The story follows a crew of bank robbers who document their heists on social media. Their content goes viral. Along the way, they give stolen money back to ordinary people. Meanwhile, they become some of the most wanted criminals the FBI has ever pursued. To catch them, the bureau turns to an unlikely asset. A hacker currently under house arrest reluctantly agrees to help in exchange for having her charges dropped.
A cast built for chaos
The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Anna Sawai, Pete Davidson, Zoë Kravitz, Rhenzy Feliz, John C. Reilly, and Christian Slater. Each character arrives in the trailer with a distinct energy. Hoult plays Ryan, the charismatic architect of the operation. He frames the entire scheme as content creation rather than crime. Davidson plays Vince, the more cautious partner. Vince insists on using blanks so nobody gets hurt. Anna Sawai plays Reagan Gardner, the reluctant FBI asset whose obvious sympathy for the robbers complicates her assignment from the start.
The chemistry between the cast crackles throughout. There is a car chase. Fans recognize the robbers mid-heist. Furthermore, the crew accumulates 900 million views across 15 banks and the FBI still cannot catch them.
The film has a point to make
Beneath the comedy, a clear thematic undercurrent runs through the trailer. The robbers frame their crimes as a direct response to institutional corruption. They argue that banks have harmed ordinary people for decades without consequence. That message resonates strongly enough with Reagan that she openly admits she likes them. As a result, a tension forms at the heart of the story between her job and her convictions. Notably, the film leans into that conflict rather than avoiding it.
Mark Bianculli wrote the screenplay. Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, Allan Mandelbaum, David Leitch, and Kelly McCormick produced the film under Amazon MGM Studios, Imagine Entertainment, and 87North Productions.
What to expect
How To Rob A Bank carries an R rating for language, some violence, and brief drug use. Early footage at CinemaCon drew positive reactions. Observers described it as having genuine potential for the crowd-pleasing fun Leitch delivers at his best. Overall, the film opens nationwide on September 4, 2026.
