The Kia Telluride seatbelt recall 2026 is now official. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed the recall covers certain 2027 Kia Telluride and Kia Telluride Hybrid SUVs. Moreover, the defect involves a driver seat belt emergency locking retractor that may lock unexpectedly while the vehicle is in operation. Furthermore, the problem traces back to an incorrect vehicle sensor installed in some seatbelt assemblies by a supplier during the manufacturing process. Consequently, the affected vehicles fail to meet federal motor vehicle safety standards.

The recall covers a specific production window. Kia Telluride and Telluride Hybrid models manufactured between March 24, 2026, and May 12, 2026, fall within the scope of the recall. Moreover, the total number of affected vehicles is 6,264.  Consequently, owners of other Kia vehicles do not need to take any action based on this specific recall.

What the seatbelt defect actually means for drivers

The seatbelt emergency locking retractor is a critical safety component in every vehicle. Moreover, when the retractor locks unexpectedly under normal driving conditions, it can cause discomfort and restrict the driver’s movement unnecessarily. Furthermore, a seatbelt that fails to function correctly in an emergency represents a direct safety risk to the vehicle’s occupants. Consequently, NHTSA treats any defect that prevents a seatbelt from meeting federal safety standards as a priority recall.

The root cause in this case is a sensor installed incorrectly by a supplier rather than a design flaw in the vehicle itself. Moreover, the incorrect sensor causes the seatbelt assembly to behave differently than intended. Additionally, Kia has identified the affected production run and is working with dealers to correct the issue through a direct parts replacement. Consequently, owners do not need to diagnose or assess the problem themselves. The fix will be handled entirely at the dealership level.

What Kia owners need to do right now

Kia is directing all affected owners to bring their vehicles to an authorized dealership for repair. Technicians will replace the seatbelt assembly at no charge to the owner. Moreover, this is a free repair covered entirely under the recall program.

Vehicle identification numbers tied to this recall will be searchable on the NHTSA website starting Tuesday, June 16. Moreover, that search tool allows owners to confirm whether their specific vehicle falls within the affected production range. Additionally, Kia plans to mail owner notification letters on July 31, 2026.

How to contact Kia and NHTSA for more information

Two direct contact options are available for owners who want to follow up on the Kia Telluride seatbelt recall 2026. Kia customer service can be reached at 800-333-4542 for questions about the recall process, repair scheduling, and vehicle eligibility. Moreover, the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline is available at 888-327-4236 for owners who want independent confirmation of the recall details or who have concerns about the safety of their specific vehicle. Furthermore, both lines are staffed to handle recall inquiries and can provide guidance on next steps.

Acting quickly on a seatbelt recall is always advisable. Seatbelts are the single most important passive safety system in any vehicle and their proper function directly affects survival outcomes in serious crashes. Moreover, the repair is free, straightforward, and handled entirely at the dealer level.
