Beyoncé is facing a copyright lawsuit over her 2022 song “Alien Superstar.”
The track, which appeared on her Grammy-winning album Renaissance, allegedly contains a sample that a production company claims was used without authorization from the song’s rightful copyright owner.
The dispute centers on a portion of the song’s introduction. The production company says it owns the rights to an earlier recording that features the same spoken-word material heard at the beginning of Beyoncé’s track.
The lawsuit could determine who had the legal authority to license the material used on “Alien Superstar.”
Beyoncé Alien Superstar Sample Sparks Lawsuit
“Alien Superstar” opens with a spoken announcement telling listeners to remain calm and stay on the dance floor.
That same passage reportedly appears in an earlier recording associated with the group Foremost Poets and artist John Holiday, who has also been known by another name.
According to the allegations, Beyoncé’s team attempted to obtain permission to use the material. However, the company now claiming ownership says Holidayiday did not have the authority to grant that permission.
The company alleges that Holidayiday had transferred away his rights to the material decades ago. As a result, it argues that any authorization he provided to Beyoncé’s team was not legally valid.
The dispute does not appear to center on whether the sample was used. Instead, the key question is whether the person who authorized its use actually had the legal right to do so.
Who Owns the ‘Alien Superstar’ Sample?
The ownership dispute could become the central issue in the case.
The production company claims it acquired the relevant rights years ago and therefore had authority over licensing the material. It is seeking compensation for the alleged unauthorized use.
The company is also asking the court to restrict Beyoncé from continuing to profit from the song while the dispute is resolved.
However, it remains unclear whether the court will grant that request. Music copyright disputes can involve complicated questions surrounding ownership, licensing agreements and the chain of rights attached to older recordings.
Beyoncé’s representatives and the other parties named in the case had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of the report.
Beyoncé Has Not Responded to Lawsuit
“Alien Superstar” was released as part of Renaissance in 2022 and became one of the album’s most recognizable tracks.
The album marked a major musical era for Beyoncé and earned widespread critical acclaim. “Alien Superstar” also became popular on social media, where fans used the song in videos and other posts.
The lawsuit does not currently mean the song will be removed from streaming services. Any decision about potential restrictions, payments or other remedies will depend on how the legal dispute develops.
For now, the case centers on a question that frequently arises in the music industry: who has the legal authority to license a piece of a recording when ownership has changed hands over the years?
If the production company proves that it owned the relevant rights and that the sample was licensed by someone without authority, Beyoncé and her team could face financial consequences.
