Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx is looking back on one of the hardest periods of his life. The actor recently discussed his 2023 stroke and the long recovery that followed.
During an appearance on Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, Foxx described rehabilitation as an emotional and difficult experience. He said the idea of receiving a second chance at life was hard for him to process at first.
Jamie Foxx found comfort in comedy
As Foxx worked through rehabilitation, comedy became a way to stay connected to himself. He often joked with medical staff and performed celebrity impressions during his time in care.
Denzel Washington was among the celebrities he impersonated. His humor sometimes made routine medical checks more complicated for the staff. However, Foxx viewed the jokes as more than entertainment.
Comedy helped him hold on to the personality that had defined much of his career. It also gave him a way to cope with an unfamiliar period of his life.
His daughter, Corinne Foxx, has also discussed her father’s behavior during his recovery. She recalled how medical workers sometimes had to work out whether Foxx was joking or simply behaving as he normally did.
Foxx later returned to the nurses who cared for him. That reunion carried particular meaning for the actor, who wanted to recognize the people who supported him during his recovery.

Foxx is also moving into another chapter of his career. He is set to star in Deadlocked, an upcoming thriller directed by Nikhil Bhat.
The film follows a retired Marine who becomes caught in a courthouse takeover while serving on a jury. Foxx will play the former Marine, bringing him into a tense situation that forces him back toward the life he left behind.
Sasha Calle, known for The Flash and The Rip, is also part of the cast. Eric Scot Anderson and Matt Takejiro Bosack wrote the screenplay.
For Foxx, the project represents another step forward after a period that changed his outlook. His latest reflections show how closely comedy, performance and identity have remained connected throughout his life.
His recovery story also adds another layer to his return to the screen. After facing an unexpected interruption to his career, Foxx is once again preparing to do what audiences have known him for over several decades.
