Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen was arrested early Sunday morning after his preseason debut with the team.
Marion County detention records show that Allen was arrested in downtown Indianapolis on charges related to operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
The arrest occurred around 1 a.m. ET on South Meridian Street. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers initially approached Allen’s vehicle because it was parked in a no-parking zone.
During the interaction, officers reportedly noticed signs of intoxication.
Allen, 34, was taken into custody and booked into the Marion County Adult Detention Center.
According to the detention records, he faces an OWI-Endanger Person Class A misdemeanor charge. He also faces an OWI-Alcohol Concentration Equivalent of .08 or More Class C misdemeanor charge.
The arrest came just hours after Allen took the field for the Colts for the first time.
Keenan Allen makes Colts preseason debut
Allen made his Colts preseason debut Saturday afternoon during the team’s preseason finale against the Detroit Lions.
The veteran receiver played only four snaps but made an immediate impact. He caught one pass for 24 yards during his brief appearance.
The game took place at Lucas Oil Stadium, less than a mile from where Allen was later arrested.
The Colts acquired Allen on Aug. 19. Indianapolis signed the veteran receiver to a one-year contract worth up to $8.32 million.
Allen joined the Colts after spending the previous seven seasons working with head coach Shane Steichen during their time with the San Diego and Los Angeles Chargers.
That familiarity helped make Allen a natural addition to Indianapolis’ receiving group.
Colts respond to Keenan Allen arrest
The Colts acknowledged Allen’s arrest in a statement but did not provide additional details.
The team said it was aware of the incident and was gathering more information. Indianapolis also indicated that it had no further comment at this time.
The arrest comes at an important point in the Colts’ offseason.
Indianapolis must reduce its roster from 90 players to 52 by 6 p.m. ET on Sunday. The situation could therefore factor into the team’s roster decisions.
Any potential NFL discipline would come separately from the legal process.
Under the NFL’s substance abuse policy, a first-time offender who is convicted of or admits to a violation can face a three-game suspension.
The league has not announced whether Allen will receive discipline or when it might make a determination.
Keenan Allen brings veteran experience
Before joining Indianapolis, Allen built one of the most productive receiving careers of his generation.
Through 171 career games, he has recorded 1,055 receptions for 12,051 yards and 70 touchdowns.
Those numbers place Allen among the NFL’s all-time leaders.
He currently ranks 13th in league history in receptions. He also ranks 33rd in receiving yards and is tied for 52nd in receiving touchdowns.
Allen is also approaching several milestones involving Colts legends.
He entered the season just 15 receptions behind Reggie Wayne, who finished his career with 1,070 catches.
Allen is also 47 receptions behind Marvin Harrison, who recorded 1,102 career receptions.
The veteran receiver was expected to provide experience alongside Alec Pierce, Josh Downs and Ashton Dulin.
For now, the Colts are gathering information as the organization evaluates the situation.
Allen’s arrest adds another layer of uncertainty to an already important roster decision for Indianapolis as the regular season approaches.
