Jamie Foxx is opening up about comedy, sensitive audiences and getting older in Hollywood as he prepares to release his new Hulu special, Take Care of Yourself.
The actor and comedian recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the special, which premieres Oct. 7. During the conversation, Foxx explained that he removed several jokes from his material after watching the backlash surrounding the 2024 roast of Kevin Hart.
Jamie Foxx says audiences have become more sensitive
Foxx said the reaction to the Kevin Hart roast made him rethink some of his comedy material. Rather than risk jokes being taken personally, he decided to remove certain parts of his act.
The comedian also acknowledged that some subjects can carry real emotional weight. He pointed to the controversy surrounding jokes about George Floyd and said he did not agree with that material.
For Foxx, the experience created a reason to become more selective with his comedy.
He wants to keep his act fresh while avoiding material that could cause unnecessary harm. At the same time, he suggested that comedians now have to think carefully about how audiences might interpret their jokes.
That balance appears to be an important part of Foxx’s approach as he returns to the spotlight with his new special.
Jamie Foxx explains why he avoids podcasts
Foxx also addressed why he has stayed away from podcast appearances, including potential appearances on shows such as Club Shay Shay.
According to Foxx, podcasts can create pressure for guests to say something controversial to generate attention online. He questioned whether having a conversation now requires making an outrageous statement simply to satisfy the algorithm.
That concern has become increasingly relevant as celebrity interviews spread across social media.
A single comment can quickly become a headline, clip or viral debate. Foxx appears determined to avoid that cycle and focus instead on conversations that leave him in a positive place.
His decision also reflects a broader change in celebrity interviews. Long-form podcasts can give stars more room to speak, but they can also turn individual comments into viral moments within minutes.
Jamie Foxx embraces getting older
Foxx also revealed that he removed a joke about aging and watching some of his hip-hop heroes get older.
The comedian discussed seeing longtime stars such as Deion Sanders and Halle Berry enter different stages of life while continuing to maintain successful careers.
Rather than viewing aging as something negative, Foxx framed it as evidence of longevity.
He pointed to the fact that established stars can continue earning money and securing major opportunities as they get older. For him, reaching that stage represents success.
The idea also connects to Foxx’s own career. He has spent decades working across comedy, music and film while remaining one of Hollywood’s most recognizable entertainers.
His comments suggest that he sees aging as another chapter rather than an endpoint.
Jamie Foxx prepares for his Hulu return
Foxx’s comments arrive as he promotes Take Care of Yourself, his latest comedy special for Hulu.
The project gives the entertainer another opportunity to connect with audiences through comedy while reflecting on life, fame and his experiences.
After years in the entertainment industry, Foxx has plenty of material to draw from. However, his recent comments show that he is also thinking carefully about how he presents that material to today’s audiences.
Take Care of Yourself premieres Oct. 7 on Hulu.
