Michael Jordan is honoring his late mother, Deloris P. Jordan, with a historic $10 million gift to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Social Work.
The donation marks the largest single gift in the school’s history. It will expand major programs and help support students preparing for careers in social work.
The gift also gives Jordan a new way to honor his mother’s lifelong commitment to helping children, families and communities.
Michael Jordan honors his mother with major gift
Jordan’s $10 million donation will support two major initiatives at UNC’s School of Social Work.
As part of the gift, the university will rename its Global Social Development Innovations Center. It will now be known as the Deloris P. Jordan Global Social Development Innovations Center.
The new name recognizes Deloris P. Jordan’s decades of service and her commitment to families and communities.
“My mother has always believed in the power of helping children, families and communities,” Jordan said.
He added that she spent her life putting that belief into action.
Donation will support future social workers
The gift will also establish the Jordan Family Scholars program. The initiative will provide financial support to students pursuing a Master of Social Work degree.
Ten students will make up the program’s inaugural class. Each scholar will receive a $12,500 scholarship.
The program aims to help future social workers continue their education while preparing to serve children, families and communities.
For Jordan, the initiative connects his family’s legacy with the next generation of social work professionals.
Jordan family has deep UNC connection
The donation continues a longstanding relationship between the Jordan family and UNC’s social work program.
Jordan and his family helped establish the Jordan Institute for Families in 1996. The institute supports work involving children and families through research, policy and community engagement.
The latest gift builds on that history while creating additional opportunities for students and expanding the school’s work.
Jordan is also continuing a philanthropic legacy that reaches beyond his legendary basketball career.
Michael Jordan expands his legacy
Jordan became one of basketball’s most recognizable figures during his career. However, his connection to UNC began long before his professional success.
Now, his latest gift places a focus on education, social work and community support.
By naming the center after his mother, Jordan is also keeping her influence connected to the university’s work.
The $10 million donation represents a major investment in the School of Social Work. It also creates scholarships for students who want to build careers serving communities.
For Jordan, the gift offers a lasting way to honor his mother while supporting the future of social work at UNC.
