Hey y’all, hey! Welcome back to According to Porsha, your go-to spot for culture, excellence and authenticity. This is Haute to Watch, where I tell you what deserves your screen time and what can stay sitting in the queue. Let’s get into it!
Forever My Lady
First up is Forever My Lady, now streaming on Prime Video. Starring Torrei Hart, Darius McCrary and Clifton Powell, the film explores love, family and what happens when unresolved history follows you into a new chapter. I’ll be watching to see whether the women get fully developed stories of their own or end up carrying the consequences of everyone else’s decisions. Because, baby, we need more than a love story. We need character development!
The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable
Next is The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable, which follows Dutch-Moroccan rapper Cilvaringz from Wu-Tang superfan to member of the group’s inner circle. He also helped create Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, the controversial album produced as a single copy. Was it a protest against an industry that undervalues music, or did it make a piece of culture inaccessible to the people who helped build it? That’s a conversation about ownership, access and the value of art.
Seriously Single Too
For something lighter, Seriously Single Too stars Fulu Modibedi and Tumi Morake as best friends Dineo and Noni, whose plans to enjoy single life together change after an unexpected proposal. The film puts Black female friendship at the center and raises a relatable question: What happens when one friend finds her happy ending and the other fears being left behind?
9-1-1 Season 10
Angela Bassett returns as Athena Grant for Season 10 of 9-1-1, airing on ABC and streaming the following day on Hulu. Bassett remains a commanding television presence, but I’m looking beyond the emergencies and dramatic rescues. Is the show still giving Athena stories worthy of her talent, or is her star power doing most of the work?
The Drop: A Snowfall Saga
You should STILL be watching The Drop: A Snowfall Saga, starring Gail Bean and Isaiah John as Wanda and Leon. The series expands the Snowfall universe, with Wanda recognizing the cultural and commercial potential of West Coast hip-hop. Her reinvention raises a compelling question: Can a woman escape the identity the world assigned her and claim her power without losing herself? Check out my cast interviews on Revelence YouTube!
War
Add War to your watchlist for its power struggles, complicated alliances and clashes between ambition and loyalty. Pay attention to who gets praised for being strategic and who gets labeled dangerous for playing the same game. Sometimes, the double standard tells the story.
Lanterns
We also have Lanterns, starring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. Known for voicing Mufasa, Pierre is stepping into the DC universe as one of its major Black superheroes. The real test is whether John Stewart gets the emotional depth, authority and rich mythology that iconic heroes deserve. Representation gets us through the door, but the writing has to give us a reason to stay.
Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars
For food and travel lovers, Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars explores the pressure of chefs pursuing or trying to retain the industry’s most coveted recognition. Come for the gorgeous food and stay for the ambition and anxiety behind every plate.
Mark Your Viewing Calendar
The Gilded Age is scheduled to return to HBO and HBO Max on November 1, while All’s Fair is set to premiere on Hulu on November 4. Mark your calendars!
