Rappers Jay-Z and J. Cole are supporting Lil Durk’s effort to leave jail as he awaits another federal trial. Both artists submitted letters to a judge backing the Chicago rapper’s request for release on bail.
Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, was acquitted of murder-for-hire and related charges in September 2026. However, he remains in custody while facing a separate racketeering charge. His lawyers argue that the acquittal strengthens his case for release before the next trial.
Jay-Z highlights Lil Durk’s community work
In his letter, Jay-Z described Durk as respectful, career-focused and committed to helping young artists from his community.
The music mogul highlighted how Durk used his success to sign emerging performers and help them enter the music industry. He argued that Durk’s work offered young people opportunities beyond the challenges they faced in their neighborhoods.
Jay-Z also asked the judge to consider Durk’s acquittal and his right to be presumed innocent of the charges that remain pending. He said release would allow the rapper to support his family and continue his community work.
J. Cole points to their collaboration
J. Cole also submitted a letter supporting Durk’s request. He reflected on their collaboration on “All My Life,” their Grammy-winning 2023 song about perseverance, growth and positive change.
Cole explained that Durk strongly believed in the song’s message and wanted it to reach listeners who could relate to his experiences. Cole said the rapper’s commitment to that message helped persuade him to join the track.
He also described how young people at a juvenile detention facility recognized Durk and connected with his music. Cole presented the response as an example of the rapper’s influence on young listeners.
Lil Durk remains in custody ahead of another trial
Durk’s acquittal did not secure his immediate release because a separate federal case remains unresolved. Prosecutors have continued to pursue a racketeering-related charge, and his defense team is asking the court to reconsider his detention.
According to reports published on October 27, 2026, a hearing to review Durk’s bond request is scheduled for November 4. His lawyers have proposed using future music earnings and other assets as part of a bond package. Prosecutors oppose his release.
The judge will decide whether the proposed conditions are sufficient to allow Durk to await the next stage of his case outside custody. Until then, the letters from Jay-Z and J. Cole add prominent voices to the rapper’s request for bail.
