Actor Da’Vinchi is addressing the backlash over his controversial remarks about slavery, Black Americans and critical thinking. During an appearance on The Breakfast Club, the actor acknowledged that his wording was harsh and apologized for how he communicated his message.
The conversation followed criticism of comments he made during an earlier discussion with Cam Newton. Some viewers interpreted his remarks as suggesting that Black Americans use slavery as an excuse for their current circumstances.
However, Da’Vinchi denied that interpretation. He explained that he was discussing the importance of resilience and the effects of technology on critical thinking.
“I was never” suggesting people should forget slavery, Da’Vinchi explained during the interview. He admitted that his choice of words made it difficult for audiences to understand his intended message.
Da’Vinchi explains his controversial remarks
During the interview, Charlamagne tha God asked Da’Vinchi whether he believed Black Americans use slavery as an excuse for their current circumstances.
The actor rejected that idea, explaining that slavery is a legitimate reason for understanding the present. He also clarified that he was not telling Black Americans to forget their history.
Da’Vinchi said he did not initially realize how much criticism his earlier comments had attracted. He explained that he does not spend much time on social media and often goes offline after posting.
As a result, he learned about the backlash when people began calling him about the controversy.
The actor eventually watched the earlier interview himself. He said he understood why viewers could interpret the remarks negatively after seeing how individual clips circulated online.
Actor apologizes for his choice of words
Da’Vinchi admitted that some of his language was inappropriate for the conversation. In particular, he acknowledged that describing people as “incompetent” was too harsh.
He explained that he was discussing a broader concern about how technology affects people’s ability to think critically. According to the actor, his argument focused on how constant reliance on technology could weaken independent thinking.
He also said the conversation with Cam Newton had a competitive, sports-related dynamic. That atmosphere influenced how he expressed his thoughts, although he recognized that it did not excuse his wording.
During the interview, Da’Vinchi acknowledged that people sometimes say things online that they later regret.
He apologized for the language he used and said he wanted to communicate his message more carefully in the future.
Da’Vinchi clarifies his comments about slavery
The discussion also addressed Da’Vinchi’s comparison between slavery in different parts of the world.
He explained that he wanted to show that oppression and hatred have affected different populations throughout history. However, he acknowledged that he should have taken more time to explain the specific history of the transatlantic slave trade.
Da’Vinchi agreed that racialized slavery in America had distinct characteristics. These included the treatment of enslaved people as property and the inheritance of enslaved status by their children.
He also acknowledged the severity of the transatlantic slave trade during the conversation.
His clarification came as the hosts challenged him to explain why comparisons with other forms of slavery did not fully address the specific history of Black Americans.
The actor maintained that his broader point concerned human resilience and the ability to move forward despite adversity.

Da’Vinchi also explained that his comments were influenced by conversations about technology and mental health.
He recalled working with former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy on a tour. According to the actor, those discussions explored how constant dependence on technology could affect people’s ability to think independently.
He used the concept of metacognition, which involves thinking about one’s own thought processes, to explain his concerns.
Da’Vinchi argued that people increasingly share their opinions before reflecting carefully on what they want to communicate. He believes this habit can make thoughtful decision-making more difficult.
However, he acknowledged that his delivery overshadowed the point he wanted to make.
The actor concluded by emphasizing his belief in unity, love and human potential. He also reiterated that he did not intend to dismiss slavery or the experiences of Black Americans.
His appearance on The Breakfast Club gave him an opportunity to clarify his position and apologize for the language that contributed to the controversy.
