With all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats on the ballot, the results could shape the country’s political direction and President Donald Trump’s remaining time in office.
Major news networks are preparing extensive television and streaming coverage. However, viewers do not have to spend the entire night watching election updates to stay informed.
A simple viewing schedule, reliable news sources and official election websites can help audiences follow the biggest developments without constantly checking their phones.

How to follow election coverage without staying up all night
Watching every broadcast is unnecessary. Instead, viewers can create a schedule that prioritizes important developments and leaves room for rest.
Here is a practical viewing plan:
1. Check in during the afternoon.
Start by reviewing turnout updates, important races and developments from polling locations. For example, CNN begins its special election coverage at 4 p.m. ET, offering an early opportunity to catch up.
2. Choose one main evening broadcast.
Rather than switching between several networks, select one preferred source. NBC begins its extended coverage at 5 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, Fox News starts at 6 p.m. ET, followed by CBS at 7 p.m. ET.
3. Follow only the races that matter to you.
If congressional control interests you, prioritize competitive House and Senate races. Additionally, viewers following particular states can use local election websites for more specific updates.
4. Check the results before going to bed.
Before signing off, review the latest reported results and save outstanding races for the following morning. This way, you will not have to stay awake waiting for every contest to be called.
5. Catch up on Wednesday morning.
Election coverage will continue after Election Day. For instance, NBC plans to continue its programming through 6 a.m. ET, while CBS and other networks will provide additional results and analysis on Wednesday.
Official election resources viewers should bookmark
Television networks provide reporting and analysis, but official government websites remain important sources for election information.
These resources can help viewers distinguish verified election information from misleading social media posts.
- Vote.gov: Provides official voting information and directs users to state-specific election resources.
- U.S. Election Assistance Commission: Offers information about election administration, voting procedures and election results.
- State and Local Election Offices: Helps voters locate their official state or local election authorities.
- Election Results and Certification: Explains how election results are reported, reviewed and certified.
The Election Assistance Commission also explains that election night results are unofficial. Therefore, election officials must complete additional counting, canvassing and certification before results become final.
Why viewers should not rush to conclusions
Although election night coverage provides projections and early results, not every race will have an immediate winner.
For example, mail ballots, provisional ballots and other outstanding votes can affect the final totals. Consequently, some closely contested races may take several days or longer to resolve.
The Associated Press also explains that declaring a projected winner requires sufficient evidence that trailing candidates cannot realistically catch up. However, its election calls remain separate from official government certification.
Ultimately, following Election Day 2026 does not require an overnight commitment. By choosing a trusted news network, checking official election resources and scheduling a few viewing sessions, audiences can stay informed while protecting their time and sleep.
