Announced November 5, the initiative brings the health system together with Opportunity Resource Fund, a Michigan-based community development financial institution. The partnership aims to strengthen neighborhoods surrounding Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and Henry Ford Jackson Hospital.
Rather than providing a one-time grant program, the investment will operate through a revolving loan pool. Opportunity Resource Fund will manage the capital, approve loans and administer financing for eligible projects. As borrowers repay their loans, the money can support additional community investments.
How the $15 million investment will reach neighborhoods
The lending pool divides the funding between the two communities. Approximately $11 million is allocated to eligible ZIP codes near Henry Ford Hospital on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit. Another $4 million will support projects near Henry Ford Jackson Hospital on North East Avenue in Jackson.
The financing will address several community priorities. These include affordable housing development, home repairs and improvements that help stabilize existing housing.
Small businesses may also access financing to expand operations, create jobs or retain employees. In addition, eligible projects can include grocery retailers and businesses that provide essential neighborhood services.
Community facilities are another priority. Potential projects include childcare centers, senior facilities, community clinics and other organizations that serve local residents.
Two Detroit projects are already underway
The initiative has already moved beyond its announcement. According to Henry Ford Health, two loans are underway in Detroit.
One project supports the stabilization of newly developed affordable housing in the Virginia Park neighborhood. The second will help redevelop a long-vacant commercial building into a mixed-use development.
These early projects demonstrate how the lending pool can support different neighborhood needs. One focuses on housing stability, while the other aims to return an unused commercial property to productive use.
Who can apply for funding?
The initiative identifies several potential borrowers. These include families, first-time homebuyers, households seeking financing for home repairs, small businesses and builders committed to affordable or workforce housing.
Community nonprofits may also qualify for financing when their projects meet the program’s priorities.
However, the announcement does not provide specific loan amounts, interest rates, eligibility thresholds or application deadlines. Therefore, interested applicants should contact Opportunity Resource Fund directly to discuss their projects and available financing.
Why Henry Ford Health is investing beyond hospital walls
The partnership connects community development with the broader conditions that influence health. Stable housing, reliable neighborhood businesses and access to essential services can shape residents’ everyday lives.
Henry Ford Health President and CEO Robert G. “Bob” Riney said the investment is intended to support projects that make a meaningful difference for local communities.
Meanwhile, Byna Elliott, president and CEO of Opportunity Resource Fund, emphasized the relationship between the health system’s success and the communities around its hospitals.
Opportunity Resource Fund will track the projects supported by the lending pool. Its reporting will examine contributions to housing, economic opportunity, access to essential resources and neighborhood vitality.
Questions for Byna Elliott and Bob Riney
The announcement also raises important questions about how residents and business owners can access the funding and how the partners will measure its long-term impact.
Byna Elliott, President and CEO, Opportunity Resource Fund
For someone hearing “$15 million” and wondering, “Is any of this available to me?” For a Black woman entrepreneur with a viable business who isn’t sure she’s “loan ready,” what would you tell her? What should she bring to that first conversation, and can your team help her address what’s missing?
Robert G. “Bob” Riney, President and CEO, Henry Ford Health
During your fireside chat, you spoke about creating “monumental impact.” What does that look like in everyday life for families in Detroit and Jackson—and how will you know this $15 million investment has delivered on that promise?
The answers could help clarify how residents can participate and what measurable progress the partnership expects to deliver.
For now, the initiative creates a new financing opportunity for eligible housing, business and neighborhood projects. Its long-term impact will depend on which projects receive support, how effectively the funds circulate and whether residents experience meaningful improvements.
