Rep. Nancy Mace is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee over allegations that she improperly benefited from a congressional housing reimbursement program, according to a newly released report.
The South Carolina Republican is accused of receiving approximately $9,500 beyond the actual cost of her Washington, D.C., residence while participating in a program designed to offset housing and related expenses for lawmakers who maintain homes both in their districts and in the nation’s capital.
The inquiry stems from a referral by the Office of Congressional Conduct, a nonpartisan body that reviews potential misconduct by House members. In its report, the office stated there is substantial reason to believe Mace engaged in improper reimbursement practices.
The ethics committee confirmed Monday that it has opened a formal investigation into the matter.
Allegations tied to housing reimbursements
The housing reimbursement program at the center of the inquiry was created to help members of Congress manage the cost of lodging, food and travel while serving in Washington. Lawmakers who participate can receive reimbursements intended to defray expenses associated with maintaining dual residences.
However, the program has faced criticism for lacking detailed reporting requirements, with some watchdog groups arguing that it effectively increases lawmakers’ compensation without strict oversight.
According to the Office of Congressional Conduct, Mace allegedly sought and received payments exceeding her documented housing costs. The report did not indicate that criminal charges have been filed but concluded that further review by the ethics panel was warranted.
Mace did not respond to inquiries from the watchdog office during its review, according to the report.
Mace disputes the claims
Through her attorney, William Sullivan, Mace strongly denied any wrongdoing. In a letter to the ethics committee, Sullivan described the report as fundamentally flawed and argued that its narrative appeared to be influenced by Mace’s former fiancé, who co-owned the Washington residence in question.
Sullivan maintained that the allegations mischaracterized the financial arrangement tied to the property and said the congresswoman acted within the rules of the reimbursement program.
Mace has not publicly commented in detail since the investigation was announced.
Political implications ahead of gubernatorial race
The ethics probe comes at a pivotal time for Mace. She is not seeking reelection to the House and is instead running in a competitive Republican primary for governor of South Carolina.
Ethics investigations do not automatically result in disciplinary action, but they can draw heightened scrutiny, particularly during an active campaign. The House Ethics Committee has the authority to recommend sanctions ranging from reprimands to more severe penalties, depending on its findings.
For now, the investigation remains ongoing. The committee typically does not provide regular updates while a review is underway.
The case underscores renewed attention on congressional reimbursement programs and how they are monitored. As the probe unfolds, its outcome could carry implications not only for Mace’s political future but also for broader oversight of lawmakers’ expense policies.
