“Mortal Kombat II” storms Theaters this May as a deadly war begins

Mar. 03, 2026 / Film+ Trailers / Author: Praise Swint

The fight for survival is far from over. Mortal Kombat II is set to bring the blockbuster video game franchise back to the big screen in an even bloodier and higher-stakes sequel, with Earthrealm hanging in the balance.

From New Line Cinema, the follow-up to the 2021 film expands the universe with returning fan favorites and one long-awaited addition: Johnny Cage. This time, the champions are forced into a brutal, no-holds-barred confrontation against the dark rule of Shao Kahn, whose looming power threatens the very existence of Earthrealm and its defenders.

The sequel promises to lean fully into the franchise’s signature intensity, delivering larger fight sequences, heightened mythology and the visceral action that made the games a global phenomenon.

Leading the new chapter is Karl Urban, who takes on the role of Johnny Cage, the cocky and charismatic fighter long requested by fans. His arrival signals a major expansion of the cinematic roster.

Urban joins returning cast members Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan and Damon Herriman. The ensemble also features Chin Han and Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion.

The growing lineup reflects the franchise’s commitment to honoring its game roots while introducing fresh energy for a new installment.

Director Simon McQuoid returns to helm the sequel, continuing the cinematic vision he introduced in the 2021 adaptation. The screenplay is written by Jeremy Slater and is based on the iconic video game created by Ed Boon and John Tobias.

The film is produced by Todd Garner, E. Bennett Walsh, James Wan, Toby Emmerich and McQuoid, with executive producers including Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Slater, Boon and Lawrence Kasanoff.

Behind the camera, the sequel brings together a seasoned creative team. Stephen F. Windon serves as director of photography, Yohei Taneda handles production design, Stuart Levy edits the action-packed sequences and Cappi Ireland oversees costume design. Casting is led by Rich Delia, with music composed by Benjamin Wallfisch.

Mortal Kombat II is positioned as a global theatrical event. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures and is set to debut exclusively in theaters and IMAX across North America on May 8, 2026. International releases begin May 6, 2026.

The emphasis on IMAX screenings highlights the scale of the sequel’s action and visual effects, aiming to immerse audiences in the franchise’s larger-than-life combat arenas.

Expanding a fan-favorite universe

The original Mortal Kombat game franchise has built a decades-long legacy defined by its elaborate lore, unforgettable characters and unapologetically graphic battles. The 2021 film adaptation reintroduced that world to modern audiences, and the sequel now pushes the narrative further into tournament territory.

At the center of the conflict stands Shao Kahn, whose dominance casts a shadow over Earthrealm. The returning champions must confront not only external enemies but also the escalating pressure of protecting their realm from annihilation.

With Johnny Cage officially entering the fight and beloved warriors returning to the battlefield, Mortal Kombat II aims to deliver a cinematic experience that honors its roots while raising the intensity.

Mortal Kombat II arrives in theaters and IMAX on May 8, 2026.
