Nick Cannon explained that his 15-year-old daughter Monroe’s viral remark about having only one brother was aimed at teenagers online falsely claiming to be her siblings not a rejection of her younger half siblings
Nick Cannon’s daughter Monroe sparked widespread confusion late last year with a comment about her siblings, and her father has now set the record straight. Monroe, 15, whom Nick shares with ex-wife Mariah Carey, posted on her Instagram Story in November 2025 stating she only has one brother. The remark went viral immediately given that Nick is father to 12 children in total. However, on the April 29 episode of the Club Shay Shay podcast with Shannon Sharpe, Nick explained the real context behind the Nick Cannon daughter Monroe sibling situation.
What Monroe actually meant
The confusion stemmed from a very specific problem Monroe was dealing with online. Teenagers were claiming on social media to be Monroe and Moroccan’s siblings. As a result, Monroe wanted to address those false claims directly. Her post was aimed at those fake accounts, not at her actual younger half siblings.
Nick told Sharpe that the world jumped into a teenage gossip conversation and turned it into something far bigger than it was ever meant to be. Monroe clarified afterward that she did not mean to dismiss her father’s other children. She simply meant she had one brother in her age group, referring to her twin Moroccan. The distinction got lost once the post began circulating widely.
How Monroe reacted when it went viral
Monroe was upset by the way the situation spiraled. Nick confirmed that his daughter felt her words had been taken out of context and blown into something she never intended. Furthermore, she felt pressure to explain herself publicly, which is something Nick ultimately advised against.
He told Monroe that she did not owe anyone an explanation. At the same time, he used the moment as a teaching opportunity. He reminded her to be careful with what she shares on social media because even small, innocuous comments can take on a life of their own once they leave her control. It was, by his own description, a lesson he knows well from years of navigating public life himself.
Nick Cannon’s 12 children
The Nick Cannon daughter Monroe sibling story makes more sense with a full picture of his family. Monroe and her twin Moroccan, both 15, are his children with Mariah Carey. Nick and Mariah announced their split in 2015 after six years of marriage and finalized their divorce the following year.
His other 10 children are as follows. With Brittany Bell, he has 1. Golden “Sagon,” 9, 2. Powerful Queen, 5, and 3. Rise Messiah, 3. With Abby De La Rosa, he has 4. Zion Mixolydian, 4, 5. Zillion Heir, 4, and 6. Beautiful Zeppelin, 3. With Bre Tiesi, he has 7. Legendary Love, 3. With LaNisha Cole, he has 8. Onyx Ice, 3. With Alyssa Scott, he has 9. Halo Marie, 3. He and Alyssa also shared son 10. Zen, who passed away at five months old in 2021 from brain cancer.
Monroe and Moroccan’s relationship with their siblings
Despite the online confusion, Monroe and Moroccan maintain a warm relationship with their younger siblings. Nick has shared that the older twins spend quality time with some of the younger children, particularly around the holidays. Consequently, the viral post did not reflect the actual dynamic within the family. Rather, it reflected a teenager’s attempt to deal with a specific online problem that quickly got out of hand.
Nick’s handling of the situation addressing it publicly while also coaching his daughter privately reflects a parenting approach built on honesty and preparation for life in the spotlight.
