A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of northern Connecticut as powerful storms move through the region, bringing the risk of damaging winds and hail.

The National Weather Service issued the alert for Hartford County on Tuesday afternoon, warning residents of rapidly changing conditions and potential hazards linked to strong thunderstorms.

The warning comes as the state is already dealing with unusually high temperatures, adding another layer of weather-related risk for residents.

Wind gusts up to 60 mph expected

The National Weather Service said storms moving through the Hartford region could produce wind gusts reaching up to 60 mph. In addition, the system may bring small hail and heavy rain in some areas.

National Weather Service reported that the storm system was tracking eastward at around 30 mph, impacting communities across Hartford County.

Officials warned that such wind speeds are strong enough to cause damage to trees and power lines. As a result, residents were advised to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm’s peak intensity.

Emergency guidance also recommended seeking shelter in interior rooms on the lowest floors of buildings for safety.

Hartford County placed under severe weather threat

The warning specifically targeted parts of Hartford County, including areas in northern Connecticut.

Meteorologists indicated that the storm system had developed over Burlington before moving east across the region. In addition, the fast-moving nature of the storm increased the risk of sudden weather changes within a short period.

Local authorities emphasized that even short-lived thunderstorms can produce dangerous conditions when wind speeds are high. Therefore, residents were urged to stay alert and monitor updates from official weather sources.

The combination of strong winds and hail also raised concerns about localized property damage.

Heat advisory adds to weather risks

The severe thunderstorm warning follows an ongoing heat advisory across much of Connecticut.

Temperatures in the state were forecast to climb into the 90s, with some areas potentially breaking seasonal records. This extreme heat, combined with incoming storms, has created volatile weather conditions.

Experts note that such contrasts in temperature can sometimes intensify storm development. In addition, high heat levels increase strain on infrastructure and power systems, especially if storm-related outages occur.

Residents were advised to stay hydrated and take precautions during both the heat and storm conditions.

Officials urge caution as conditions change quickly

Authorities stressed that weather conditions could shift rapidly as the storm system moves across the region.

Because of the potential for sudden wind gusts and hail, emergency officials encouraged residents to remain indoors until the storm passes. In addition, they warned that downed trees and power lines could create hazardous conditions even after the storm weakens.

Utility crews were placed on standby in anticipation of possible outages.

The National Weather Service continues to monitor the system as it tracks eastward, with updates expected if conditions worsen.

Outlook remains unstable as storms continue

While the storm is expected to move out of the area later in the evening, forecasters caution that additional weather activity may develop depending on atmospheric conditions.

For now, residents across northern Connecticut are being urged to stay informed and prioritize safety as severe weather and extreme heat combine to create challenging conditions.
