A Brendan Haywood Michael Jordan story from their Washington Wizards days has gone viral again. The former NBA center shared the full account on the TFU Podcast. It involves a rare team night out, a $15,000 bar tab and a hasty escape from a club. Two young players simply could not cover the bill. Consequently, they did what anyone in that position might do: they ran.
Haywood set the scene with important context. The night began after a big Wizards win. Jordan was in a generous mood and surprised his teammates with a club invitation. Furthermore, for players in that era, an invitation from Michael Jordan was not something you turned down. It was an experience in itself.
Jordan stayed 45 minutes and left without paying
The evening took an unexpected turn quickly. Jordan stayed for only 45 minutes before deciding to head back to the hotel. In itself, that would have been unremarkable. However, he left without settling the tab. He apparently assumed his famous presence at the venue was sufficient compensation for whatever the night had cost.
That logic did not impress the club promoter. As soon as Jordan walked out, the promoter looked around for someone else to hand the bill to. He found Haywood and teammate Jared Jeffries. The total came to $15,000. Neither player was prepared for that moment.
A $15,000 bill on a $5,000 monthly budget
For two young players still finding their footing in the league, the number was staggering. Haywood was blunt about it when telling the story. At the time, he was a sophomore in the league. His monthly income was approximately $5,000. The tab was three times that figure. Paying it was simply not possible.
He and Jeffries assessed the situation quickly. Together, they came up with a plan. They told the promoter they needed to step outside to get a credit card. That explanation bought them just enough time. Instead of returning with payment, they kept walking and did not look back.
Running out of the club
Haywood described the escape with obvious amusement. He and Jeffries ran out of the club because they had no way to cover the bill. The story resonates because it is genuinely funny. It also reveals something real about what it was like to be a young player in Michael Jordan’s orbit.
Jordan’s assumption that his presence alone was sufficient payment reflected enormous confidence in his own celebrity. That confidence was not entirely without basis. Nevertheless, it left his teammates in a genuinely difficult position. As a result, two NBA players found themselves sprinting away from a venue after a night that had started as a generous gesture from one of the greatest players of all time.
The story has spread widely online for good reason. It humanizes everyone involved. It also captures the absurd and unpredictable side of life in the NBA that rarely makes it into the highlight reels.
