World Cup Ticket Frenzy: NYC Fans Sell Out Lottery in 3 Minutes

May. 26, 2026 / Sports / Author: Praise Swint

New Yorkers eager to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup wasted no time Monday morning as the city’s discounted ticket lottery hit its daily limit within just three minutes of opening.

The overwhelming demand came after Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a special program offering select city residents the chance to purchase World Cup tickets for only $50.

According to city officials, the lottery allows 1,000 New York City residents to secure discounted tickets for matches taking place at MetLife Stadium. The offer also includes free round-trip bus transportation from New York City to the stadium.

The city capped registrations at 50,000 entries per day, but the first day’s limit disappeared almost instantly as thousands rushed online when registration opened at 10 a.m.

Fans rushed to secure rare $50 World Cup tickets

The low ticket price quickly became one of the biggest reasons for the frenzy.

Sports business expert Robert J. DiGisi said the offer stands out because attending most major sporting events in the New York area often costs significantly more before tickets are even purchased.

Transportation, parking and other event expenses can already exceed $50 for many fans attending professional games around the city.

For soccer supporters, the opportunity to attend a World Cup match at that price created unusually high demand.

The World Cup’s rarity added to the excitement

The 2026 tournament marks only the second time the United States has hosted the FIFA World Cup.

The last men’s World Cup held in the country took place in 1994, making the event especially significant for American soccer fans who may never have experienced the tournament in person.

Experts say scarcity naturally drives demand in situations like this. Unlike yearly sports leagues, the World Cup arrives only once every few decades in the United States.

That rarity, combined with soccer’s growing popularity across America, helped intensify competition for the discounted tickets.

Soccer’s popularity continues growing in the United States

Interest in soccer has steadily expanded in recent years thanks to streaming platforms, international leagues and increased global exposure.

Fans now have easier access to matches from Europe and other major soccer markets, helping the sport attract larger audiences in the United States.

The World Cup’s global appeal also plays a major role in ticket demand. Even casual sports fans often view the tournament as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

City officials said New Yorkers can continue entering the lottery once per day through May 30.

Website issues appeared during registration

Although the registration system handled the massive traffic surge, some users reported error messages connected to certain phone area codes.

A spokesperson for City Hall said the city is working with ticketing platform FEVO to address the issue.

Officials also confirmed that the website itself did not crash despite the rush of traffic during the opening minutes.

Lottery winners are expected to receive notification on June 3.

The rapid sellout highlights just how much excitement already surrounds the 2026 World Cup across the New York and New Jersey region. With discounted tickets in limited supply and soccer interest continuing to rise nationwide, competition for seats is expected to remain intense throughout the tournament buildup.
